Hello,

I recently got this SFR BOX NB6VAC and I would like to change the DNS... In the BOX... Which seems quite difficult, according to what I've read online.. Of course, I can't do it either..

Is there a solution..?? Or is it definitely not possible...?

Are there any other interesting pieces of information on the subject..??

Thanks in advance to everyone.

Hello,

why do you want to change the DNS provided by your box?

Change them in the clients, it's better that way.

Especially since we need to evolve towards DOH today, Windows 11 allows it.

And there you go....

But goodness, those line breaks are so annoying!!

I'm transcribing what was in my previous BOX (coaxial) Sagemcom 3686

and I'm letting Windows 11 uninstall itself... but I'm learning DOH..!!

Are you switching to fiber?

I know that there are hidden pages in SFR boxes, but I don't know if there's one for that ....

Maybe /network/lan?

Yes, I switched to real fiber; 1 Gb / 600

I went through all that, in vain, likewise, I can't find DynDNS... We'll manage anyway, the IP being fixed...

Hello,

Although the contrary is stated, the hidden network page remains accessible via Fiber, but it only returns the local IP of the Box and the mask which can be modified.

On a NB6 (although mine is not VAC), we have access to local DNS (which means attributing a hostname to a local IP) via v4-DNS network and to DynDNS via DynDNS in the same menu (without having a choice of service type).

However, there doesn't seem to be a way to change the DNS servers, which are those of SFR at 109.0.66.10 and 20.

Fixed,

but probably shared, if you have a hosted server, you'll have to forget about ipv4.

Yes, so I knew the menu from another NB6 and I used it from the very first hour to set the central IP of my network, it works.

I have read many times that for DNS, it is not possible...

DynDNS doesn't seem to exist either... It seems a bit strange to me because there are quite a few people using it...?

My IP is static, but the future should confirm that.... As for sharing, I don't think so, but I can't verify it... It also depends on where it is being shared from..??

-- Yes, I have a server at home, it doesn’t necessarily seem to require IPV6.

Nperf tells me that IPV6 is not activated...? and yet, I see it a bit everywhere in the BOX...

-- Well, we shouldn't delude ourselves either, I should really study this a bit deeper and understand how it works.

But we won't forget IPV4 for that matter...! it's too deeply engraved in stone.

If you have a server hosted behind a CG-NAT, you will have to forget it in IPv4, but you might not be on CG-NAT.

Hello,

I have a bit more explanation:

These fiber connections, particularly recent ones, are in IPV6 and the NB6VAC BOX is entirely dedicated to it. This is the main reason for the incompatibility with Dyndns, which previously existed on most BOXes...

The software of this BOX is divided into two parts... That of the manufacturer necessary for the operation of the BOX... and that of the ISP which adds its personal and adapted touch... Including the menus that have been changed (no more DynDNS) while these menus existed well before the download of the ISP configuration...

So... I remain intrigued: does this mean that in IPV6, we no longer need Dyndns...?

How do we then find the route to this site, only with IPV6 and no DynDNS..??

-- I am not in CG-NAT, I am not in the field... However, my IP seems to be dynamic... it changes.

So... I'm still intrigued: does that mean that with IPV6, we no longer need Dyndns...?

It's different,

you can configure static addresses on your server(s) while staying within the /64 range of your network prefix, but there's plenty of space, 16 billion billion addresses in a /64.

So Dyndns is no longer useful, but there is a lack of a public DNS to have a friendly name, for that you need to register your own domain with a registrar, but well, that costs a few € (or even dozens) per year depending on the TLD, for a .fr it's about 10/year.

Does your IP address change?

Which one?

Then you can put any names you want in your domain and it's public.
