Hello,
Quick info for owners of Cocopa BT638, I picked up 2 today and I must admit that, while it's not exactly a scam, it's pretty close; let me explain:
The drive itself is just an old IDE DVD burner (yes, IDE), so it's very likely recycled drives from very old laptops (around 2005-2006) made to look nice (they put a USB DRIVE sticker on it so you can't see the model and manufacturing date, but a quick look in the device manager reveals the trick) placed in a brand new casing with a nice IDE->USB adapter.
The interface is absolutely not USB3 (it's mini USB, so USB2) at the controller level; the only benefit of having a "USB3" cable is to provide enough power for the thing. This is actually where your problem lies, the USB cable is just a cable connected to the internal adapter that shifts over time, so it’s enough to open the drive and reconnect it properly.
To open the casing, you need to remove 2 hidden screws under the rubber feet at the back of the drive, where the USB cable is, pull the top part of the casing back, follow the cable and reconnect everything, check and magic...
Hello, indeed, a real piece of Chinese junk! As far as I'm concerned, the magic hasn't worked...
Following your advice, I opened the case and discovered the card connected to the SATA interface. After extracting everything, I was able to replace the drive with a 2007 model, which started up immediately, allowing me to at least do the burning I was expecting. The provided SATA PCB allowed me to burn at x4, not enough to jump through the ceiling, but the reused drive was recognized in less than the blink of an eye, and it no longer makes noises after being connected.
Looking closer, the bulges from the gigantic adhesive added to the drive seem to obscure the original references. Since its best place will quickly be the trash anyway, I will take care to check all of that before disposal.
Well, for the price, we still get the case, the USB cable, and the SATA PCB, better than nothing, and we keep our refurbishing services going, good for the planet.
Beware, this item is still for sale...
