Google passwords leaked online

Hello everyone,

Today I received the following email from Google, the problem being that it involves between 200 and 300 passwords. I have already started changing the most important accounts, but I’m at my wit's end… I would like to understand how something like this can happen? How does Google know? Because personally, I’ve been using my computer very little lately… Moreover, when I need saved passwords from Google (when I can’t remember them), they always ask for the password of the associated Google account to display the list, so I don’t get it? Do any of you know more about this and could explain this “leak” to me? Can two-factor authentication prevent this from happening again?

Thank you for your involvement.

“Some of your saved passwords have been exposed in a data breach on a site or app you use (your Google account is not affected).

The Google Password Manager recommends that you change them now to protect your accounts.”

Hello, if you are receiving this message, it's because one or more sites where you registered have been hacked and their data has been exposed to the public (for example, email addresses, passwords, etc.). Google must have retrieved this data in order to alert the affected users.

By entering your email address on the site https://haveibeenpwned.com/, you can see the name of the site or sites that have experienced a breach related to one of your accounts or identifiers.

Two-factor authentication only prevents someone who has obtained your password from accessing your account, as another temporary code will be required. But it won't stop a hacker from stealing data by successfully hacking a site.

I don't know exactly why you have 200-300 compromised passwords, but generally this happens when the same password is used across multiple sites (which should be avoided).
