Hello everyone,
I recently encountered two problems with my external hard drive (Toshiba 2TB) that I didn't have before the last Windows update.
When I plug it in, it opens without issues, but if I want to move or rename files, I get a message saying "You need administrative rights to copy this file." If I click continue, no problem, the external drive performs the action I request, but it is still cumbersome.
The second problem is that when I want to play a video file from the external drive, I can't play it at all.
Once the files are copied to my computer, there are no issues reading them. I also have another external hard drive (1TB) from the same brand that has no problems copying and reading files.
After searching the forum, I couldn't find an answer, as both external drives have the same permissions in the security section of the properties.
I'm turning to you for help in resolving this issue.
Thank you in advance,
Naudhiz

You can do it directly on the disk properties, right-click, properties, security, modify permissions.
Thank you, but if I have to do this operation for each file on the external hard drive, I'll never be done. Where can I perform this action directly on the properties of the external hard drive?
Great, the manipulation worked.
But is there a reason why I no longer have administrative rights on my own external hard drive?

I have the same issue with my external hard drive; if I connect it to another PC, I have to redo the process when I reconnect it to my PC. I still haven't found an explanation for that, my external hard drive is a Seagate Expansion Drive 5TB.
Hello, I also have this problem. The external hard drive where all the folders are accessible except for the ones created recently... my professional laptop is the choice of my employers, hence my obligation to use an external HDD for space.
From my work computer, I can't access the properties to change my access rights: I'm not an administrator there...
The tutorial on Crabe Info isn't helping me. On another private laptop, I have access to the tools since I'm the admin there, but attempting to change the properties results in errors! Ultimately, I don't know why, but now I always get the message indicating that for folder A: I do not have permission to open the folder, but once I click continue, there's no problem. For another folder B: I also click continue, but there it’s dead, I can't go any further... it’s so erratic!
I made this attempt hoping that the changes made by another computer would render the data accessible on my work laptop... It’s crazy that Microsoft can put us in such a mess! I managed to avoid Vista at the time, but now, it’s unstoppable. They will never change... I should mention that I copied the data onto my external drive from a fixed PC (a third one) running Windows 7. And on Windows 7, I have access to everything, I shared, made it accessible... but it has no effect once connected to my work laptop...
Anyway, help!
