Hello there,
A little hello doesn’t cost anything!
Is your DVD reader internal or external to the MacBook Air?

A thousand apologies for the greeting,
Thank you for getting back to me.
The drive is external and it’s almost as old as my iMac, which is 7 years old.
My MacBook Air from 2020 doesn’t have a USB port. So I’m using a USB-C to USB female cable. I don’t understand the message (connect the drive to a powered port)
Thank you for your help.
Best regards

In my opinion, you need a powered outlet (from the electric network) to operate your DVD player.
Some portable hard drives use only their USB/microUSB cable to power themselves from the PC.

The reader is of the Apple brand and there is only a fixed cord that ends with a male USB connector. How can it be powered? And why does it work well on my iMac when connected directly to the CPU?
Best regards

Alright, thank you, I think I will follow your advice, especially since I don't have many DVDs. I will transfer them with my iMac to hard drives so that I can watch them anywhere.
Thank you and have a great day

Hello,
I think the explanation is as follows:
The USB A to USB C adapter you are using does not supply the necessary power to the DVD drive. (The USB A ports on the iMac provide this power.)
Apple DVD drives, even older SuperDrives, are compatible with new Macs with USB C ports, but the USB adapter used must provide the necessary power, which is not the case for all adapters. An example of an adapter that provides this power is:
https://www.apple.com/fr/shop/product/HMYE2ZM/A/adaptateur-multiport-pro-usb-c-aluminium-de-satechi
Also see this page:

So there's no need to buy another drive since the issue will be the same. It's better to get a suitable adapter.

Hello,
I think your DVD drive is too old and cannot be used with your 2020 MacBook.
Either you get another DVD drive for the MacBook, or you abandon your project, as it will have to remain connected to the iMac only.
