Android update stuck in a loop and mobile phone blocked.

Question

Hello,  On a a Samsung Galaxy S5 with Android 6, I tried to download an update that was proposed. It started yesterday evening, phone plugged into a USB port. This morning, the update is still running (a turquoise green screen with 2 gears turning) and it indicates, for example: Android starting, optimizing app 18/18. Then, the screen turns off, I wake it up with the power button, the green screen comes back and this time indicates 15, 16, or 17/18, then back to 18/18, then it turns off again, and we go back to 15-16 or 17/18... indefinitely apparently. Occasionally, the small blue LED on the left lights up, but not always.  It's impossible to interrupt the process, nothing responds, and even removing the battery, the green update screen returns to 16 out of 18!  I really don't know what to do... Thank you in advance if this issue is known.

Take your phone (charged preferably).  Force it to turn off (press the Power button for a long time)  When the screen goes dark or at least at the first sign that it is dimming, release the Power button  - if the phone is stubborn and never turns off (which I would doubt) still proceed to the next step  and now press the Power, Home, and Volume + buttons at the same time.  At the first sign that the screen lights up, release all the buttons.  Finally, you will be on a new screen, be very careful before confirming any action.  navigate using the Volume - and Volume + buttons to move up and down  - select "wipe cache partition" and press the Power button to confirm  - select "reboot system now" and press the Power button to confirm  With a bit of luck, the problem is solved (still wait if you see it loading 16/18 etc) otherwise you may need to select the "wipe data/factory reset" option which will erase all your personal data, so think carefully before selecting "wipe data/factory reset".  video tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YCYRIAOCUrE

Okay, and thanks. Just for your information, even when removing the SIM card, it goes back to the same screen, but with 11 out of 22 for example...  I'm trying your technique, but the problem is that even holding down the "on" button for 1 minute, the screen won't turn off!!!  What do you mean by "If the phone is stubborn, move on to the next step"?  I can turn off the update by pressing home, power, and volume simultaneously, but then it restarts (Samsung screen) and then goes back to the update!

Thank you,   by manipulating the 3 buttons together, I managed to select and perform the two actions you indicated in the Recovery menu, but in the end, the phone turns back on and invariably ends up on the update... at 17 out of 19 before bugging again at 19/19... Then the screen turns off and if we restart it, everything starts over. The maneuver has been repeated 4 times unsuccessfully.   Having nothing left to lose, I did a "wipe data/factory reset," and I started over from scratch, but finally without this infernal mechanism!   Thank you for the information, it has been helpful.
