Hello,
I just discovered that my brother's Facebook account, who passed away 10 years ago, was deleted recently. Does Facebook delete inactive accounts on its own, or can this action only be taken at the request of the family?
Thank you for your help, we are shocked, we are losing our memories and our photos.

To my knowledge, FB only acts upon the family's request, but generally it's the opposite; it's for people who want to obtain a memorial page or to close the account.
It's often slow and frustrating.
FB should never be a storage place, as the content can never be guaranteed, let alone for life.
However, FB remains entirely "free," as a private company, to do what it wants. For an account inactive for 10 years, it's not surprising that it gets deleted, especially if no specific steps have been taken. It was possible to do this, to request access to the deceased's account and then recover the content.
Don't forget that it's not a philanthropic enterprise either, and that the space or content of a page "belongs" to them; they have every "right" to delete data without your consent.
