Enable virtualization on ARM M1

Solved

Hello,

I am a student and I use virtual machines with Virtual Box. I just got a new MacBook Air 2020 with the new M1 chip!

However, virtualization is not enabled by default like in the old Macs. Can you please help me figure out how to enable it or maybe find a workaround?

Thank you in advance.

Best regards.

    Hello,

No Mac has had virtualization enabled by default.

I don't know what virtualization application you are using, nor what you wish to virtualize, but what is certain is that no Mac produced since 1984 has been shipped with a virtualization application pre-installed.

    Best regards.

EDIT: I'm not aware of the compatibility of the latest versions of VirtualBox with the latest Mac models. Please check this point here: https://www.virtualbox.org

He is talking about CPU activation, your comment is useless as you don't know anything.

As virtualization is no longer based on an Intel processor, it has become a bit more complicated for developers! ;-)

As far as I know, Parallels Desktop is well advanced, and betas are being offered to those who want to dive in. VMware Vision and VirtualBox do not yet have a version available.

In a neighboring category, although based on a different principle, CrossOver apparently works (however, it remains to be seen which Windows applications will be able to run this way).

In the meantime, it's become official: Parallels Desktop 16 works on Macs with M1 processors. But be careful, virtualization can only be done for systems running on ARM processors, so for Windows, it must be the Windows 10 version for ARM. See the more complete instructions on this page...

For the moment, still nothing from VirtualBox, though.

    Good evening,

If the issue is running applications written solely for Intel processor code,
on M1 Mac processors (like my MacBook Air), there is a software layer called Rosetta, and in the latest versions of Big Sur, when you try to launch an application written only for Intel processor, the system asks to activate Rosetta if it hasn’t been done yet. You can then accept the activation in that case. You can directly activate Rosetta by going to the System / Library / Coreservices / Rosetta Updater, or Rosetta 2 updater...

    Best regards.
