Toshiba VHS Player

Hello, I have a Toshiba RDXV50KF VCR that plays VHS and DVDs. I haven't used the VHS player in a while, and now there's a problem: I can insert the VHS tape, but the VCR stops after 4 to 7 seconds. I turn the VCR back on, and it happens again: it turns off. I tried using a cleaning tape, but the same problem occurs; everything stops. I think it's not a technical issue but a TV setting that might have been changed by mistake, but which one?? The DVD player works perfectly. Thank you for your help!!

I think it's more likely that it's the mechanical part of the VHS player that's acting up; we should take it apart and see what's going on, a stuck axle?

Thank you, I don't think it's mechanical because... since I thought it was broken, I just bought a new one (same model) and it's the same problem with the new one, so for me, it's a configuration-programming issue that I know nothing about. I'm really very frustrated because I just spent money, possibly for nothing... I will try the test suggested by MPMP10. Thank you very much already, and if you have any other ideas, I'm open to them!!

Hello, I returned the VCR to the seller. For the information of the community, he found what wasn't working: the drive wheel was stuck because the silicone had dried out. He managed to free it and it's working again. So it was nothing, but the VCR, although new, is an old model and the gears had seized up. Thanks again for your help. Best regards.

indeed, if these devices do not run, the grease eventually gums up and blocks various mechanisms...

By the way, it might be the same problem you encountered with your first VCR: "I hadn't used the VHS player in a long time and had a problem".

So don't throw away this device or its remote; it might be repairable and sellable.

I tend to think it's more of a mechanical or electronic problem with the VCR. To be sure, you just need to try inserting a tape without connecting any other device to the VCR.

The enemy is foolish: he believes that we are the enemy when it is he who is!

Yes, I agree! I don't see the logic behind this malfunction, I can't think it's mechanical because whether it's on the old device or the new one I've just received, the problem is the same... Do you see anything in the TV or VCR settings that could be blocking the VHS playback and only that one? A format somewhere that might not be right?

By experience, where the tapes have wear-related defects, the VCR is designed to reject them to avoid ending up with a tape that can no longer be ejected later; it seems that this has sometimes been mentioned in the manual.

I would pretty much agree, before playing it, to wind the cassette all the way forward and then rewind it

Hi,

for me, it comes from the tape; the tape is stuck or jammed, which triggers the VCR's safety mechanism.

To respond to Andy31200, it's not certain that the VCR is powerful enough to rewind the tape, but it's worth a try.

To do this properly, it would be good to test the VCR with a new cassette.

Thank you for your response. I tried with a new tape that has never been used, same problem. I will try to rewind it on an external rewinder, we'll see if that works better. What's strange is that if I put it in fast forward, it works, it fast forwards quickly, but if I stop the fast forwarding, the VCR shuts off.

It’s possible that the device has a moisture detector, check if you have the manual...

Thank you, but the tapes are not stored in a humid place. I tried with several tapes, a new one (never recorded) and some old ones, the problem persists.

These combined models are no longer manufactured, so they are not new.

Try your VHS tapes on a working/functional VCR if you have that option in your surroundings.

No other ideas for the moment except to get a refund from your seller.

Also keep your important VHS tapes away from these increasingly temperamental machines because when the magnetic tape is crumpled, it's really bad, even ruined.

Hello, I have a Toshiba Rdx v kf 50 combo that I've owned for 11 years, and everything was working fine until the day the VHS player keeps returning the tape after 5 to 7 seconds and ejects it. If anyone can provide information, thank you.
