VIDEOS TS

Solved

Hello,

I have an old PC on which I burned memories of photos and videos with editing onto DVDs. On this PC, I can read the DVDs without any problem via VLC. Well, I recently bought a laptop and I would like to transfer everything to this new PC. So, as a test, I copied a DVD onto an external hard drive. Then from the external hard drive, I pasted it onto the new PC.

On the old PC, I can read the edited videos that are on the external hard drive using VLC. However, on the new PC, whether the external hard drive is connected or the file that I pasted, I can't read them at all. VLC doesn't launch, the video files appear with a Media Player logo (which also doesn't launch), and I can't choose VLC for playback. What should I do?

Thank you in advance.

Hi,

Convert the VIDEO_TS folder to .ISO using DVD Shrink

VLC opens ISO files well.

Hello,

To launch with VLC, rather than clicking on the files, you should try opening VLC first, then in VLC go to Media/Open.

Hello,

when opening VLC, it finds the folder, but it's empty inside. It doesn't find any files. If I right-click on the video ts to open with, VLC is not an option. However, when I search and choose to open with VLC, I get the error message "irrecoverable failure."

On the other hand, I have the message to check "always use this app to open .IFO files."

It suggests going to the Windows store and offers to install other apps, but I'm not interested in that.

Thank you.

Hello

Jeepee's idea is the right one

You need to open VLC
Media menu
Open a FILE

Point

Ciao ciao

bizarre that VLC does not display the files, they do have a .ts extension? Do you display extensions in the explorer or not?

The strangest thing is that the old PC, on the external drive, reads the files with VLC

We should open one and go to tools/information on the codecs to see the type of encoding of the videos

to return to the original, when we burn a DVD, we can put it in DVD format, or in a simple file format. In the first case, copying the files does not necessarily make them readable, to extract the videos, we have to perform the reverse operation of burning in DVD format, "ripping", extracting the video.

I confirm VLC cannot find the file. Just to clarify, the extension is ._ts and not .ts
Finally, I don't know if that makes a difference.

And as a reminder, the copy I made on the external hard drive is playable on VLC on the old PC.

I don't understand this.

it's really curious

you should do a test with a commercial DVD
to pinpoint the problem

it could come from the new PC
the editing software
the burning software

Hello,
Why not put the DVD directly into the new PC?
Does this new PC not have a DVD drive?

No, the new laptop does not have a DVD drive.

I will check the properties/codecs and keep you updated.

OK.
Otherwise, there is the solution of an external DVD drive.

So I right-click on the video_ts file. I see file type IFO,
Opens with Windows Media Player. And if I try to change in modify, I don't see VLC.

My goal is to backup my DVDs since there is no longer a player.

_ts is not a file extension; the extension would be .ts

An IFO file is one of the files in the structure of a DVD, see: https://www.commentcamarche.net/contents/390-fichier-ifo

So as I mentioned earlier, in order to turn a DVD into a regular video file, you need to convert it, "rip" it

It’s been a while since I did that, but I think FormatFactory does it. The best would be to do it from the original DVD on the old PC, or to be sure that you have copied all the files present on the DVD to the external drive.

Hello, finally an answer with a future. You need either a video editing software with a DVD import option, which is very easy, or an authoring software that does this job for free but is complex, like DVD Shrink. The useful files are .ts
https://www.commentcamarche.net/telecharger/tv-video/8305-dvd-shrink/
There is Cyberlink Power DVD 2Go 13 or Essential for free in a reduced option

Hello,

I have successfully copied all the files from the DVD.

I've found an old directory copied from a burned DVD (a VHS transformed into a DVD), here's what it contains:

The files containing the video are the .VOB, which is apparent from their size. When I launch the VIDEO_TS.IFO file in VLC, I get a menu to choose which video to play, there are 2 on the DVD.

I need to convert the entire folder to make it into a video. I can't remember how I did it back then; I use many software programs. I tried FormatFactory, but it doesn't recognize the folder as a DVD; it must perform a conversion from the physical DVD, not a copy on disk.

Thank you.

For me, video_ts corresponds to the menu that I created. But I finally downloaded a DVD/Blu-ray player software from the Windows Store that works very well.

It remains a mystery for VLC in any case.

I thank you all for your help.

Hello,

If the version you have is the one from the Windows Store, that is not the right one!
You need to uninstall it and install the "real" VLC: https://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.fr.html

Best regards

Hi,

well, there was indeed an update of VLC, but not from Windows, so I have fewer options in the menus. From there, VLC works for my DVDs. So that was it then!

Thanks again...
