How to retrieve mpg videos and edit them

Good evening,

I had requested in 2016 that a unit of Radio-Tv convert some super-8 films for me; I received them in MPG format. I can't play them with Windows Media Player, but, on your advice, I can play them with VLC Media Player. - I would like to edit these videos, lighten them, add titles, etc. However, Windows Movie Maker also refuses to load them (message: The selected file is not valid or is damaged.). - Is there a way to convert them into a readable format? Thank you in advance.

    With VLC
    Go to MEDIA
    Convert/Stream

    "Open Media" window
    File
    + Add
    Search and open
    Click on Convert/Stream

    "Convert" window
    Video profile - H.264 + MP (MP4)
    Destination file (Browse)
    Save

    Start

      Yes, I can indeed convert to MPEG or MP4.
      But W. Movie Maker does not open it; well AVIDEMUX does.
      I just need to read up on a subject that is completely foreign to me.
      It's off to a good start.

    Hello,

    What operating system do you have: XP, Windows 7/8/10?

    With Windows Live Movie Maker (Windows 7 or later), you normally need to convert the files to MP4 using, for example, XMedia Recode or Avidemux or another software of your choice.
    VLC can also do it, but for me, the method is complicated...

    I suggest you try a trick...
    If you are on Windows 10, try opening your MPG file with the default Movies & TV player. It should then offer you to download the MPEG-2 codec for free to be able to read MPG files, by signing into your Microsoft account. Once that's done, you should be able to open your file with Movie Maker, just like I can.

    It's strange that your Movie Maker doesn't open MP4...

    What version of Movie Maker do you have?
