Question

Hello everyone, I’m encountering the following problem: I click on Start, I choose Shut down, and it says shutting down Windows but nothing happens. I’m forced to cut my computer’s power.

Hi everyone.

Most shutdown problems are related to graphics drivers. Check your drivers.
Also check all the programs running before shutting down (Ctrl+Alt+Del). Many of them are useless and don’t respond to shutdown interruptions. If these programs start at startup, delete them. A good tool for this: RegClean

For my problem, after extensive searching I notice that my issue comes from my Internet service provider via FREE's ADSL.
Specifically from the FREEBOX. Indeed, when I cut the power to the Freebox since there is no switch, I can restart without a problem. however I always have a problem restarting Windows. The computer hangs on the Windows display "closing Windows". I am forced to shut down manually.

Hello, my Windows that I just installed on a Pentium 1 133MHz 64 MB RAM works perfectly except when I shut it down it stays stuck on the Windows shutdown screen and I have to force it to stop manually; I reformatted and reinstalled but still the same!

Hello, I’m running XP and my screen says: you can turn off your computer, but unfortunately the button on the front of my tower doesn’t control that function, so I get under the desk on all fours and switch off the power strip switch. The problem of Windows 98 not closing is very well explained on Microsoft's site. url: http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;fr;238096 I faced this problem and it was resolved by modifying the FastReboot item (changing from 1 to 0) in the registry as explained on the Microsoft site. I had the same problem that I fixed by updating the Freebox drivers as well as the Intel motherboard drivers on this site that brings them all together, including for other OSes. http://install.free.fr/ updated this morning May 17, 2004. since then, my Win98SE closes normally...!

Without having read all the messages I would like to say in passing that Windows 98 shutdown problems are numerous! I solved this problem on a workstation after several trials with no conclusive results! I asked a technician and he told me it came from the motherboard and that there was nothing to be done, so not fully believing his words I formatted and reinstalled Win98; since then the workstation stops without problems by applying the classical procedure.  PS: two things that are most often at fault: a device driver and the fast shutdown that must be disabled.

When I turn off my computer, it says: fatal error OE appeared at 0028:C02A27A8 in the VXD VWIN32(05) + 000012DO and then it asks me to press a key to quit the application. Hi there. I didn’t fix this famous Win98SE shutdown issue with the patch, even though I downloaded and installed it on the machine. Sometimes Windows shuts down normally and I don’t need to press power, other times it doesn’t shut down and I have to press power. I didn’t know what to do anymore and I’m wondering where this problem comes from. Does anyone know? Has anyone already fixed this problem? In the end I had to reformat the PC and that’s okay. Yet I have that but it doesn’t work, so if someone has the fix, I’d like: In order to avoid the message "you can now safely shut down your computer" Go into Windows registry. Go to HK EY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Microsoft\windowsNT\CurrentVersion\winlogon Right-click PowerDownAfterShutdown.choose modify and set the value to 1 Warning! This manipulation does not work on all configurations.  Or  Start > Run and type "regedit". Go to the directories up to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel, once at this level, click on the "Desktop" folder. It then opens in the right panel. Right-click in this panel and create a new string value named "AutoEndTasks". Double-click it and set the value to "1". Hi In general patch notes don’t work for W98 1st edition, especially if it’s a PC with an old power supply (the one that shuts off abruptly, not sleep mode, usually with a 220V outlet on an additional power strip) The case on my old PC, the solution in this case is “simply” in the Computer Properties, and in the system peripherals to remove ACPI management, yes, remove it. Reboot and it works!! or rather it stops!!

It takes at least 500 MB of free space for your PC to shut down with the message "You can now safely turn off your computer."

Still on Windows shutdown problems! ... and well! you won't be staying up all night ... to my knowledge there is only formatting that can solve the problem.

On the machine labeled "76" I share my solution that was applied on a machine now over a year ago and since then no more problems, so I am open to any discussion if someone has a solid solution that does not involve formatting.

I had to format and reinstall Windows 98, the problem occurred again, so I downloaded and installed this patch again and everything is back to normal. Hello  when I execute the command it stops, the PC freezes at the message "Windows 98 closing"  The problem came when I removed the RAM extension (I had 32 MB + 64 MB and I removed 64 MB)  So at every startup the disk scan starts automatically saying that the PC did not shut down normally  Regards

That's right, the lack of RAM is one of the causes of this failure. When I installed this patch the first time, the crash was improved but 1 in 3 times it still crashed. Later I upgraded my machine with a 256 MB stick and then the problem completely disappeared, but it still had a pause time between clicking OK as mentioned above, because if I click consecutively on Start > Stop > OK it still sometimes crashes.
