Hello,

I received this message earlier when restarting my old Windows 98...

At startup, it displays "Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer.", but I can boot in safe mode...

I don't see where this could come from or how to fix it...

Thank you for your help as this is quite important
Configuration: Windows XP Firefox 2.0.0.11

Well yes, he's posting with a PC that runs on XP since the other one is out of order

look in safe mode at the device manager to see if there are any ! or ?
also try to start step by step to see at which point it gets stuck

Thank you for your response!

What exactly do you mean by starting step by step?

This is following a blue screen after which I restarted, so I think it's more of a peripheral issue than a registry problem, even though I read that a scanreg /restore or /fix could save me... I also read that it could be related to the RAM stick but I won't be able to start in Safe Mode... I'll follow your lead then.

Thanks.

If you want to start in safe mode (F8) you also have the step-by-step mode!

If it's a peripheral, you will see it in safe mode as I mentioned
Scanreg/restore can work if you have "messed up your registry with some manipulation, there are 5 possible recovery bases, but not for faulty hardware.

Okay, it was about old corrupted registry keys corresponding to missing drivers that Windows was searching for at startup,

I realized this by starting it step by step and not loading those files at startup; I was then able to start normally,

I then deleted the old corresponding keys (although I could have done it in safe mode as well) from the registry and it starts perfectly.

Thanks again, and if someone could mark my topic as resolved... ;)

It can also run under the Win98 system. It gives you the message "Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer." So the solution I implemented is to reinstall it. Because it's a system error, for more information about this message, visit http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;fr;149962&Product=w98seIN1 and good luck, it's the only solution.
