Hello,
I bought a Mac version El Capitan 10.11.6 and I couldn't download iMovie; I keep getting the message that I need a newer version. I keep trying to download it, but Apple isn't offering me an older version. I'm stuck because I can't edit my videos since most of them are paid or my system can't open them... Do you have a solution, please... thank you

Configuration: iPhone / Safari 12.1.2

In fact, it seems that you need iLife '11 (which contains iMovie 9.0) to be able to do the updates.
However, iLife '11, nor any other version of iLife, can only be found on DVD: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ILife
In principle, this suite used to come with Macs before. So it can't be found on the App Store.

After a bit of searching, I found this on Archive.org: https://archive.org/details/iLife_Install_DVD_Version_11_2Z691-6677-A_Apple_2010
I think it should be in English.

No idea if this could be useful to you or not.

Errata: iLife '11 would not work with El Capitan: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8230439
There you go, I'm afraid you're not any further ahead... sorry.
