Hello,
My daughter took over my old 15-inch Mac a few months ago, which runs on a 2.53 GHz Intel Core Duo processor - 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 memory.
Of course, visiting questionable sites, downloading images, etc., etc., etc...
However, when I go on YouTube or Netflix, I can't play any videos anymore. My browser is outdated.
What should I do? What should I download to upgrade?
Thank you for your feedback.
Configuration: Macintosh / Safari 5.0.6

Hello,
It's not the browser that needs to be upgraded, but the Mac. Regardless of the browser for your OS, you will have the same problems.
To provide you with valid advice and avoid long guessing, you need to give the exact configuration of the Mac or its serial number because we are not fortune tellers and our crystal balls are malfunctioning ;-)
You are on Leopard (10.5.8). Here’s an example on how to find your configuration, a visual aid:
https://forums.commentcamarche.net/forum/affich-31933037-snow-leopard?page=3#50
And if needed, to find the serial number:
https://support.apple.com/fr-fr/HT204308
Come back with the information, and you'll know everything.
When it's urgent, it's already too late (Talleyrand)
When all else fails, read the manual ;)

Hello,
This MBP can therefore be upgraded to Mac OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), the last OS supported by this model, but to do this, you must first update to Snow Leopard (10.6), which can be purchased from the Apple site: https://www.apple.com/fr/shop/refurbished for the modest sum of about €20.
After installation, follow this guide: install Mac OS X 10.6
Then you need to download and install El Capitan (free) by following the instructions provided in these links:
https://support.apple.com/fr-fr/HT211683
https://itunes.apple.com/app/os-x-el-capitan/id1147835434?mt=12
However, newer OS versions are quite memory-hungry (RAM), so you will need to change the two current sticks, each 2 GB, by replacing them with two sticks of type
204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
According to Apple, 4 GB is sufficient; however, in practice, the Mac will experience significant slowdowns, depending on how it is used.
It is certain that when modified this way, this MBP could last a few more years without problems and without issues for browsing.
Sincerely.
PS: A similar message, which can be read with interest but without taking into account the Mac model, which is not specified.

Thank you dede74000 - Mac OS X Snow Leopard purchased. And... surprise... my CD drive isn't working! So, I took the initiative to put the CD in my external drive but obviously it doesn't work on my MAC either... so I connected it to my other Mac, transferred the program to a USB drive. When I insert the USB drive and copy to the desktop, the message that appears is "The application 'Install Mac OS X' cannot be used from this volume".... Slowly but surely ;-) What should I do, boss? Thank you.
What is the reference for the external drive? It may just be a matter of installing the driver for Mac, unless this drive is incompatible.
The internal drive might work after being cleaned with a CD Cleaner.
The USB key, on which Snow Leopard was copied, is certainly not formatted as it should be.
Therefore, information on these topics needs to be provided. We'll see afterwards.
Just in case, here’s a tutorial on creating a USB key for Snow Leopard:

No luck... it doesn't recognize it because my Mac Book Pro has an internal optical drive (the included drive) and since it dates back to before 2008... no possible driver... Great ;-)
I will try the option of buying a USB key with a lot of gigabytes to format it and prepare it as you suggested in one of your links ;-)

Indeed, it should appear - But I read on forums that this MacBook Pro from before 2008 doesn't work with external drives. Checked Finder. External disks checked but not a hint of life as soon as the external drive is connected...
I went into system information, it appears... but do I have enough power to supply it? It needs 500 mA...

Where did you see that? First of all, your MBP is the 15" "mid 2009" model, so it’s from after 2008! You can check it by going to this page: https://support.apple.com/fr-fr/HT201300

I thought I had seen that ;-) I clicked on USB Device Tree and it shows up - USB BUS, Apple Internal Keyboard, BRCM2046 USB Bus, High-Speed USB Bus (iSight), and MacBook Air Super Drive USB Bus. But I don't feel like it's powered...that damn external drive - And I'm replying to you every time from my own Retina Mac.
And what if I partitioned my disk and put the OS X Snow operating system on one of the partitions? That wouldn't be a bad idea, right?
I bought a 16 GB USB key - I copied the files from the Snow Leopard disk to it. I'm trying to install it from my Retina on my key but obviously it won't let me. I put the USB key into my MacBook Pro that I'm trying to update and it keeps saying "The application 'Install Mac OS X' cannot be used from this volume..." How can I create a bootable USB key?
I've included a link in my response #5, you should be able to create a bootable key using "Diskmaker, check here to download it: https://www.cd-systems.fr/telechargement-fiche.php?num=81
I don't know what model your Retina is and if, from it, you can work with Snow Leopard. If it was delivered with that OS and if your external drive is operational when connected to it, then yes, you should be able to create a key with DiskMaker.
Personally, I would have tried using a cleaning CD for the drive, as I suggested in my response #5, it's cheap and usually works well.

I'm going crazy ;-) !!! Well, I tried to download Disc Maker 5 which I believe should run on my MacBook Pro with my MAC OS X version 10.5.8. It's obviously a vicious circle... Disc Maker doesn't work with this version of OS X... it wants me to upgrade to MAC OS X 10.7 or higher... How on earth can I create this damn boot key? Thank you, Dédé74000.... What patience ;-)
Alleluiah !!!! I found an old external CD player! I put Snow Leopard - it's installing ;-))))) More to come soon. But I think I'm going to go back to your earlier responses for my next steps ;-)
Here we go - Snow Leopard installation difficulty successfully overcome - and how long it took ;-)! Next challenge: can't load El Capitan. Do you know where I can find it? It can't be found on Apple France... Thanks for your help.
Read response number 3, I explained everything to you with the links that will guide you to get it.
However, upon re-reading, I see that I didn't specify that you need to install 2 memory sticks of 4 GB, replacing the ones currently in place, unless you think you can manage with just the 4 GB that are currently installed, but beware of slowdowns.

Ciao Dédé74000 - Thanks already for everything ;-) Indeed in 3, I went back. Impossible to download El Capitan. I looked everywhere online, it seems no one has this El Capitan... I updated everything, I can go to the second page you suggested, I come across an OS X El Capitan page but of course... nothing loads when you click on "Get".
Look here for the obtaining procedure: https://support.apple.com/fr-fr/HT211683
Did you follow the instructions?
When I have 5 minutes, I boot from my Snow Leopard disk and take a look.

Is it possible that you, by any chance - by the greatest of chances, might have already downloaded it ;-) )))))) to get your own Macs compliant? And so, you could send it to me? Tell me you have it somewhere. I read that it could be in the purchases of those who have Macs from that era. Of course, I looked in my High Sierra (which I upgraded to Mojave yesterday) but found no trace of the update (which is normal, you'd say!)
Do you have it?
Do you have it?
That's also what I was explaining to you. I come across an OS El Capitan page and when I click on "Get" - nothing happens. Furthermore, if I try to click on the little arrow next to the same "Get" box - I can copy the link or "recommend" this version to someone. So in the end, this iTunes link doesn't work either.
So it seems there's a problem with Apple.
I tried from my version of Snow Leopard and got the same result, even worse because since the second link, there's no connection.
By going through the App Store (Apple menu/App Store) and clicking on updates, I can get Mavericks, so I'm thinking you could check that side, and if it's good, you could start by installing that version while waiting for it to be possible again to get El Capitan.
Since 10.6, I haven't even been able to connect to my account, strange.
Since El Capitan, no problem, I can get Mavericks, Yosemite, and El Capitan; my account is accessible.

Hi Francis,
I gave this link in my response #3 but, no results! I tried from my Snow Leo version, with no results! And, since Snow Leopard, yesterday, my Apple ID wasn’t even recognized.
However, when I logged into the App Store/updates/, it offered me Mavericks for download :)
I don't know what they are doing at Apple, but it's glitchy!
PS: Did you take a little break? Is the work progressing?
Best wishes and have a great weekend ;-)
PS2: I couldn’t edit my message from SL, with which I tried to download again from this link and, it works today. So there really was a bug yesterday.

Hi Dede,
a thousand apologies, I didn't see that you had already posted the right link... I read the topic too quickly :(
It's a link that I had saved, having already encountered this kind of issue on the forum. It has always worked well for me, but only if you don't have a higher OS version when making the download request.
See you later
Best regards :)

You must have a problem with your Mac that prevents downloading because yesterday, after starting my Mac from my hard drive running Snow Leopard, I had no issues, the download started normally, unlike the day before.
Go to Disk Utility, select your hard drive, and run a permissions repair and then a disk repair, and then try again from the link under iTunes that we provided you. (The one from Francis)
Have you done all the updates for your Mac? (Apple menu/Software Update)

I received a response notice but, did you delete it in the meantime? I can't see it, but for the question of "opening with an application", I think your browser is simply not recognized, just use Safari.
What version of Safari do you currently have installed on your 10.6.8?
If you don’t have version 5.1.1, you can find it here:
https://www.oldapps.com/mac/safari.php?system=mac_os_x_10.6_snow_leopard_intel
When it’s urgent, it’s already too late (Talleyrand)
When everything has failed, read the manual ;)

Hello,
I just downloaded this El Capitan from the link mentioned above. I did it after starting the Mac under 10.6.8 - no issues, I just had to enter my Apple ID in the App Store. Then the download went smoothly. But since the file is 6.22 GB, it still takes a good half hour. Making this installer available on a cloud poses no problem, except that you need to have enough available space, and it will take quite a while to upload. But it's still doable. That said, there’s no objective reason why what I just did wouldn’t work elsewhere, on a Mac running at least Mac OS X 10.6.8 with a functional system. If the failures persist, it is necessary to indicate the exact symptoms and messages of this failure.
Best regards.
