Bug and disappearance of bullet lists in Word

Hello,

I searched for similar topics on the forum, but none could help me...

Here’s my problem: I work on Word 2007 and very, very often use bullet points (to write dialogues). I’ve customized them to meet my needs (shape, indent, line break, keyboard shortcut...) and I’ve been using them this way for several years without any issues. However, recently, upon reopening my document, I noticed that the keyboard shortcut I had created no longer works and, moreover, almost all of my bullet points have simply disappeared! Here are two screenshots, before and after the bug, to illustrate the problem (I’ve positioned my cursor on the dialogue paragraph each time: you can see that the ruler settings are no longer the same, and the bullet points have turned into numbers. Yet, the styles are the same!). Furthermore, more and more of my documents are experiencing the same issue, which is driving me crazy.

The first time this happened, I had to recover the styles from another document (since they stopped working), I went through each bugged paragraph, saved it, and when I reopened it next time... everything had bugged again. I thought it was the 2007 version of Word that wasn't functioning, so I downloaded version 2016 (which I’m currently using in compatibility mode), but the same issue occurs.

This is extremely cumbersome as I use this layout daily, and I can’t afford to redo each paragraph since my documents are between 200 and 300 pages.

I hope I’ve been clear enough and that you can help me!

Thank you in advance!

Hello

I have no explanation for the disappearance of the dashes.
However, the "list paragraph" style is a troublesome feature of Word that is too easily accessible and is unmanageable when used in large quantities like yours.

In your case, you need to use a style already available in Word called "bulleted list" that you can customize and modify as you wish, and you won't have this issue anymore. Unfortunately, this style does not display by default. So, open the styles pane by clicking on the dialog launcher at the bottom of the Styles group:
- Click on 'Manage Styles' then go to the 'Recommended' tab.
- Sorted alphabetically, look for the "bulleted list" style and check "Show".
It will appear in the styles pane, then right-click => "Modify" and apply a bullet with a dash

To replace all your current "list paragraph" styles, right-click on this style in the pane, then choose "select all occurrences"
Once selected, apply the "Bulleted List" style you just displayed and modified with a dash.

Hello Argitxu,

Thank you for your response!

Your method seems to be working for now. I'll wait a bit, in case the documents bug out again, and if not, my issue will be resolved!
