Hello, I need help. In some Word documents, in the Insert menu, the "Page Number" option is grayed out and it is impossible to number the pages. It seems that this is only possible by creating headers and footers, which I do not want to do. Thank you very much to anyone who can tell me what to do? Configuration: Windows / Edge 14.14393

Good evening, I just tried it and I believe you have no choice; inserting page numbering automatically creates a header. Then, all you need to do is display the ruler and modify the header to reduce it to the strict minimum. Don't forget to mark your post as "resolved" once the issue is fixed. Thank you.

Hello Anne Lys. Since the headers and footers have been designed to accommodate automatic pagination, if you don't want it, you'll need to number the pages one by one, wherever you want... -- Retirement is great! Especially in the Caribbean... :-) Raymond (INSA, AFPA, CF/R)

I would especially like to thank Raymond Pentier and also Sergio 39 for trying to help me. This doesn't solve my problem, because I wonder why Office 365 keeps the Page Numbers option if it’s going to make it unusable by graying it out. In previous versions, by clicking on Page Number, it was possible to then choose the location and format of the page number, and the numbering would only take a few seconds, even for a very large file. Since the introduction of version 365, it is not only impossible to easily number pages, but it is also impossible to know how many pages the document occupies: in the Review/Check/Statistics menu, the number of pages is always 1, no matter the length of the file. So, thank you very much for taking the time to respond to me, but my problem remains unsolved and will probably never be solved as long as Microsoft does not go back on this "backward progress". This is not the only problem with version 365, which brings unknown difficulties (for example, it is impossible to make a paragraph bold, italic, or underlined without affecting the entire document. One must undo the last action using the appropriate button on the ribbon, and if lucky, only the desired paragraph will be affected). I feel like Microsoft rushed to release this version without thoroughly evaluating it. Have you seen users complaining about these types of problems? I’m sure not. I can say that I know users well and have frequented many forums for a long time, and no one has ever complained about these ailments. So before blaming Microsoft, perhaps you should reconsider your knowledge of Office. The issue you speak of (if we can even call it an issue) is quite typical of web mode usage. Yes, in web mode, there is no concept of pages (and therefore no page count in statistics), and hence no pagination possible either. So check your display and choose Page mode. For your information, Page mode is the default mode used. Regarding the issue of paragraphs all reverting to the same format, it is also a style option that has never been a default choice either. Open the style used (other than the Normal style) and uncheck the "Automatically update" option. Sergio's response is incorrect: you can indeed insert a page number anywhere without necessarily using a full header or footer. m@rina -- Beware of herbal tea: it’s a dangerous poison...

A m@rina Problem solved. Thank you very much. I feel very foolish. Indeed, all my files, even the oldest ones, apparently are in Web mode. I will switch them back to Page mode as I use them, as I have thousands! What I don't understand is how they ended up in this situation. I am quite sure that I never intentionally performed an action that would have led to this result! I have occasionally put ONE file in read mode, for example, but never in Web mode and of course never for all my files... Since I am alone and have no contact with other Office users, I was not aware, of course, that my problems only concerned me and my ignorance, and I thought it was general. I should mention that a long time ago, I knew quite well the person who was in charge of office software for Microsoft France, in Les Ulis. She had sent me a beta version of Word for Windows 97. But the software was released without certain bugs being fixed. So I didn't have, like you, the reflex to think that Microsoft would not release a software with issues. Thanks again.
