Problem between steam and internet

Hello,

I am desperately turning to you.

Let me explain the problem:

When I open Steam, an update often starts on one of my games (Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, in this case) because I don’t open it often. The problem is that as soon as an update starts on Steam, the bandwidth gradually decreases and my connection drops (little yellow icon). When I run "troubleshoot connection issues," my assistant tells me: "the default gateway is not available."

I don’t know what that means, but I’ve looked through many forums, checked my network card settings, my Steam settings, etc. It’s clear that this happens ONLY when I’m downloading on Steam, and I feel like I’m the only one on the internet this is happening to. If any computing gods are present on this forum, I call upon their powers and altruism!

I would like to point out that I am on Windows 7, my ISP is Free, and I am on fiber optic, all connected via Ethernet to my computer.

Thank you in advance for looking into my problem.

Best regards.

Hi,

When you lose the connection, do you lose it for your entire computer, or just for Steam? Does it also cut off the internet on other devices possibly connected to the box?
Maybe your box or your network card is struggling... Especially if you’re on fiber, Steam tends to download at very high speeds. When I download an update with my old router, it can't resolve DNS addresses until Steam has finished downloading!

Hi, thanks for getting back to me!

So yes, it cuts the connection from the computer; usually, I unplug/replug my Ethernet cable and it works again within 10 seconds. Then it starts again...

As for the other devices, to be honest, I don't know, but I'm pretty sure the internet is still active (my phone stays connected via Wi-Fi).

I also noticed something pretty simple, but when I download on Steam, the connection stays relatively stable if I'm not on the internet browser at the same time. That is to say, the connection drops instantly when I launch Chrome.

The box is at most 6 months old; it would be strange for it to fail already, right?

I see a network card issue instead.
But it's strange that Chrome triggers the loss of connection. Maybe the network card can't handle an additional connection.
In any case, start by updating your driver, and if you can get another network card (even wifi), try it out to see if that's the problem.
