photoshop cs3 "layer content not directly editable" Solved

Hello,

I'm a beginner on Photoshop. I create my layers by pressing Ctrl+Shift+N (normal layer option)

I can create a gradient on my layer, but when I create a simple colored shape (a rectangle or an ellipse), I can't apply a color gradient to it; I get the message "the layer content is not directly editable." This happens even if I try the operation again on a new layer.

Can you help me? Thank you for your time!

Hello  how do I create a simple colored shape (a rectangle or an ellipse)?  Shape created how? With the selection tools or the vector tools?

under CS5, but under CS3 it's pretty much the same:
the selection tools:

the vector tools

to change:
when you use a vector shape, there are specific tools to transform it, color it, etc.
your layer, in this case, has a vector thumbnail

if you pixelize your layer, the thumbnail becomes a simple layer thumbnail
if you try to use incompatible tools on a vector layer, Photoshop will warn you with an impossibility message or will ask you to pixelize the layer

in the other direction, you need to make a selection into a path

but I prefer to tell you right away that while the conversion isn't too much of a problem for simple shapes, it's far from being the case for complex shapes
in that case, it's better to take the pen or vector tools and draw the shape in vector directly
