Photoshop cs3 "layer content not directly editable"

Hello,

I'm a beginner on Photoshop. I create my layers by pressing Ctrl+Shift+N (normal layer option)

I can create a gradient on my layer, but when I create a simple colored shape (a rectangle or an ellipse), I can't apply a color gradient to it; I get the message "the layer content is not directly editable." This happens even if I try the operation again on a new layer.

Can you help me? Thank you for your time!

Hello

how do I create a simple colored shape (a rectangle or an ellipse)?

Shape created how? With the selection tools or the vector tools?

I elaborate:
shape created with selection tools or with vector tools is different and does not support the same treatment

if your shape was created with selection tools, the gradient tool or the fill command from the edit menu are suitable
but if it was created with vector tools, you need to either go through gradient overlay to fill it, or rasterize the layer to use the gradient tool or the fill option from the edit menu
hence the message: the layer - the shape - is not compatible with the chosen fill

I use the tools displayed in the floating toolbar to my left on the screen. How can I tell what type of tool I'm using and, if necessary, how can I change it?

Thank you!
