Undetected cartridges

Hello,

My HP Photosmart 5525 printer no longer detects my blue and black cartridges. The screen displays that the cartridges "seem to be missing or damaged."

I thought it was a cartridge issue, but even after installing new ones, I encountered the same problem. When I changed the slots (e.g., yellow cartridge in place of the blue), it turned out to be a problem with the print head!

Can you please help me, as this cartridge problem is preventing the entire Photosmart from functioning? I cannot access the scanner menu or the different settings.

Thank you ^^ :-)

Configuration: Windows / Chrome 51.0.2704.106

Hello Maxikonan,

Your printer is a HP (Hewlett-Packard). Be aware that certain
firmware updates (= the software that controls the printer)
block printing if it does not detect the HP electronic chip in the
HP ink cartridges: therefore, ink cartridges from any brand other than HP, or generic ones, cannot be used!

So if your blue and black ink cartridges are not of the HP brand,
they appear as missing to the HP firmware, which then refuses
to print!

Here’s the link to the internet article with the title and subtitle:
“Has HP blocked the use of unofficial cartridges?” /
“A story of security chip” (site lesnumeriques.com).

I learned about this article thanks to message #1 from

It seems that HP has decided to backtrack, either due to the uproar from unhappy HP users, or because its method for banning the use of compatible cartridges (= unofficial HP ones) is becoming widely known.

This is rightly harming its reputation! Because even though HP is indeed the manufacturer of the printer, and given that it charges exorbitant prices for its own HP ink cartridges, it is still unfair for them not to accept the principles of free competition and to have implemented a method that prohibits the use of much cheaper compatible cartridges.

Surely, HP has finally realized that no one will want to buy its HP printers: who would want to feel trapped by the brand because they are forced to buy HP ink cartridges?
This is what they call: “a ball and chain”! Hence, HP must have realized that it would lose many customers if they could not use generic cartridges if they wished.

Here is a screenshot from the HP site, with a message regarding an offer to update the firmware for those who do not use original HP cartridges, in order to unlock the use of compatible cartridges (from another brand, or generic ones).

But be careful: you will need to check that your HP printer model is indeed listed on the drivers link provided.

If so, you can download the corrective firmware.

Hello albkan and thank you for your explanation and advice.
However, my 4 cartridges are generic, not just these ones...

...

After checking, I'm surprised but it does work indeed (for now!) so thank you very much!!
