Is 16GB of RAM in a mid-2012 MacBook Pro really advisable?

Hello,

Hello,

I am revisiting this old topic thinking that it does not answer all my questions: indeed, regarding the memory (RAM), Mactracker indicates that you can install up to 8GB for "Apple" and 16GB for "Actual". Which means that before you couldn't and now you can even if the model is from 2012??

Another oddity: when you click on "how to change the memory" in Mactracker, it clearly states that the mid-2012 model (and all even models) can only receive a total of 8GB.

So? If someone can enlighten me? Because I would really like to put 16GB (2X8GB) to give this machine a little boost. But is it really discouraged by Mac (because of the motherboard or something else, or why?)

Thank you.

Configuration: Mac OS X (10.11.6) / Safari 9.1.2

Hello,

It all depends on the exact model, there are 4 from mid 2012, including the Retina models where the memory is soldered onto the motherboard. So, if it was received with 8 GB, it cannot be upgraded to 16 GB, unless a service center is capable of doing it for the 15" model; the 13" model will remain at 8 GB.
The other two models, 13 and 15", can indeed support 16 GB, with two 8 GB modules of type 204-pin PC3-12800 (1600 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM.

In 2012, 8 GB modules did not exist, so Apple could not provide this information.
