hello.
You're not the only one with this error
https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/comments/3f3of3/0xc19001010x40017_error_from_windows_7_to_windows/
Not many answers.
Apart from the usual stuff- disable the antivirus
- check the free space on the hard drive
- update the drivers
- upgrade the bios but it's risky if you don't know what you're doing...
I'm still looking.
There are plenty of similar cases but no one has found a viable solution other than formatting and a complete reinstallation...

Hi Ameliedu45
Look on this page, choose/identify your AV and follow the procedure to disable it

See you later

Well, now that the antivirus is disabled and the drivers are fine
you will try to run setup.exe from the USB drive again.
So connected to the PC, but without pressing F12, etc...
And let me know, but I suspect there won't be any change, let's be realistic...

"Restoring your previous version of Windows"
This phrase drives me crazy (and not just that)!

Have you tried following the advice on this page: Windows 10 Anniversary Update?
In particular, uninstalling the antivirus and trying the 3 methods?

Please press any key to continue the disinfection... -
So I updated but I only disabled the antivirus until the next restart because it offered me 1 hour otherwise permanently and I refuse to disable it permanently.
Results: still the same problem. This sucks. :( -
So here it is, tonight I tried again by doing exactly as you said, permanently disabling my antivirus, running setup.exe from the USB drive and once again it didn’t work.
Thank you for all the help you gave me, in vain.
I bid farewell to the Windows 10 Anniversary Update.
I should mention that when I turn the computer back on via the central unit's button, I first get a black screen that says "Attempting to recover the installation" and a few seconds later, I am back to the black screen with the white spinning circle.
It’s only by restarting it a second time that I get "Restoring your previous version of Windows" and it boots up normally.
I am really disappointed with this computer, which had never shown its weaknesses before, and is now failing.
Thank you very much anyway, but I don’t think I will attempt a clean install. -
you are one of the rare cases finding yourself backed into a corner with a capricious update that is blocking...
and for whom a clean install is the ultimate solution.
I don't know if the forcing methods we had for W10 (the first version) are valid for version 1607.
it could be the very last of the last solutions, but now I'll have to look into the problem, and see on one of my PCs by trying the experiment..
it's not the PC itself, it could be a lot of things that come into play in your problem.
upgrades have always caused problems anyway, unfortunately that's not about to change.
you can try again in a few months and see if there is any progress..
know that every 6 months, major updates of this type will take place, so maybe the one in February will manage to go through...

I had the same problem as you with the transition from W8.1 to W10, impossible to do for a week, I had to force it and ended up with an unstable PC, so I had to do a clean install.
And for the November update, I faced the same fate, PC stuck, etc., so I did a clean install right away.
As for the August update, well, I don't know, I anticipated it; while people were trying their update, I went straight for the clean install, and had no issues whatsoever ;) except on my second PC where out of curiosity I tried the update, and the PC ended up stuck in a reboot loop..
That's computing, its ups and downs...

I just want to bring up and finally close this topic that has been around for a while to tell you that today the update happened completely by itself without me having to do anything. I didn't even schedule the update. That's it, topic closed.

@snox5
If the upgrade fails, it would be nice to open a new thread, because otherwise this one will become unreadable and incomprehensible if we have 40 people :/
