How long does Chkdsk c:f/r/ take?

Hello, this weekend, when I got home, I found my emachines e620 trying to boot up and indicating that there was an issue with pciidex.sys. (I had left it on before leaving and it was working fine except that it didn't want to communicate with the printer.)
It was impossible to start Windows Vista, even in safe mode. I inserted the startup disk and tried a startup repair which yielded nothing because after one day, it was still searching. I then attempted a chkdsk c: /f/r and after 24 hours, it was at 17,000 files out of 112,000. Yes, it seems to have a lot of errors.
My question: is it worth continuing? Anyway, this laptop is 7 and a half years old and only an Excel file was important, the rest is stored externally.

The PC is running and overheating like never before!

Thank you for your help.

Hello!

A chkdsk can last 8 hours or even longer (10 or even 15 hours for very large disks, over a terabyte). 24 hours? And it's only at 15%? I will continue if I have time, but I strongly fear that the disk is simply at the end of its life. There are certainly many defective sectors that are starting to accumulate (the one containing the file pciidex.sys must be one of them), and before too long, the number of defective sectors will be such that the disk simply won't be able to reference them all, due to a lack of available space in the associated index.
Recover the Excel file, and replace the disk.

As for the overheating laptop... well, dust it out, never place it on a soft surface, spend 20 euros on a ventilated stand... or even completely change the laptop if you have an interesting offer. A laptop cannot be modified as easily as a desktop computer ^^

Have a great day!

Luc

Thank you for your response. That's what I thought. And we are far from that capacity. The disk should be 150 GB if I'm not mistaken.
Another maybe silly question but here it is:
If the disk is that defective, it won't work either if I put it in a case to make it external?

Thanks anyway.

Actually, a hard drive at the end of its life cannot reliably store any data, the sectors fail one by one ;-)
You can indeed try to recycle it, but more for backup in case of emergency than anything else (storage for movies, for example)!
If the topic is closed, mark it as resolved :-)
