Hello,
I will be starting a DUT in GEII (electrical engineering and industrial computing) at the next school year. I need to change my computer, but I have no idea what I need. Since I don’t know which programs I will have to use, I also don’t know what specifications I should choose.
Does anyone know what I need and/or what is best for GEII?
I will be using it for word processing, internet, multimedia, and a few basic software applications (like Audacity, Paint, ...). I won't be installing games or anything, I don't think I need a very high resolution. I plan to have an external hard drive, so I don't think storage will be an issue either. However, since I will be using it for my studies, I would prefer it to be neither too big nor too heavy, and it should have sufficient battery life.
Feel free to ask if you need more details; I know it's quite vague.
It complicates things a bit, but I also don’t have a big budget.
Thanks in advance!

Hi,
In the DUT GEII program, you mainly use Word, PowerPoint, and do a bit of programming with CodeBlocks (very light programs).
I don't really think there's a need to change your PC, to be honest?
If you really want to change it, a PC costing 300/400 € should be enough.
A 2-in-1 PC would actually be more suitable in my opinion.

Thank you very much for responding so quickly!
In any case, I will need to change it; I have an old, very heavy, and very slow Vaio! But so, I don't need something very powerful if I understand correctly. Finally, great, I thought it would be a bit more expensive; I have a bit of leeway even.
I'm taking the opportunity: do you know if a particular calculator is needed? Well, I guess I will check with the professors surely? -

hello.
according to your maximum budget (which we don't know), you can very well get a more powerful laptop than you need, why??
To be at ease for several years, let's say that a slightly more powerful laptop will be less stressed, meaning less overheating, thus less premature wear on the components, and it should last longer.
So all of this is theoretical; I've seen powerful laptops die within two and a half years, and I see my cousin's laptop, the lowest range available, which is 11 years old and still running, and in working condition.
But with a price range, we can guide you in making a choice.
Assuming you don't want it too heavy or bulky, and with good battery life.
We can forget about 17 inches.
The 15-inch seems more suitable for portability.
And in terms of storage, you can almost prioritize a laptop with an SSD, convenient for moving around, less fragile than a traditional hard drive.
But there are trade-offs too.
Finally, it all depends on your needs and especially your budget.

With a maximum budget of €600, it's possible to find something suitable for your use.
And with a 15" model, it allows for more choices.
For brands, I recommend:
Asus
Toshiba (they are exiting the PC market, so there should be some good discounts, I think)
Msi (a bit more expensive and gaming-oriented)
Lenovo
Clevo (custom PCs, often a bit expensive)
After that, you can definitely consider HP and Acer, but HP tends to have inconsistent quality and lifespan.
Acer faces the same issues and tends to heat up a lot.
But all brands have had their failures, including Asus, with flawed models filled with bugs and hardware issues.
Just like you might get an HP that lasts 10 years without a hitch.
Gaming is not a crime.

Glad to hear it.
