Photo Sorting Software

Hello,
I would like to get your opinion regarding the organization of an important collection of digital photographs [some scanned, as they are very old]. I have several thousand family and friends' photos on an external hard drive, representing about xxxx GB of data accumulated over the past fifty years.
I would like to know if there is a method or software, free or paid, that allows for the automatic classification of these photographs by date, including when the date does not appear explicitly in the files.
Such a solution would be particularly useful for organizing and more easily retrieving these personal archives.
Thank you in advance for your advice and recommendations.
Best regards,
Sergio

Hello,
You can sort by metadata category with certain image processing software, for example here with Xnview.

Or, it's not very user-friendly, sorting with Exiftool, an example here where the output is done by year-month directory:

More examples and ideas in a well-documented tutorial here:

Many thanks Brucine and really sorry for not replying sooner... I only read your message today.
Very kind of you to tell me about these software that I will look for, install and test.Have a great vacation and, by the way, HAPPY THIRD OF JULY!
Sergio-
I’m on vacation including holidays every day of the year, so I don’t even have to back down, but the same goes for you if you’re working.
That said, and if the only path allowing almost any whim is ExifTool, there is a graphical variant that is digestible to appropriate oneself.
