External DVD Drive Issue

Question

Hello everyone, I have an Asus laptop running Windows 10. I bought an external disk drive which is recognized by my computer (I can see the audio/video files on the DVD but I can't play it). The first time I inserted a DVD, it directed me to the Windows Store and, as advised elsewhere on this forum, I downloaded the VLC app. Since then, when I insert the DVD, it automatically opens the Windows Store but I still don't know how to play my DVD...
I feel like this is a bit of a silly problem, so thank you in advance for your suggestions!

right-click on the start button
control panel
copy and paste or type: autoplay
in the search box at the top right
check the box use autoplay for all media and devices.
then dvd section
dvd movies and on the same line you drop down the little arrow and select vlc
to finish click on save at the bottom of the window.

type: default programs
then configure default programs
in the list scroll down to VLC media player
then on the right click on choose defaults for this program
check the box: select all then save at the bottom of the window then ok
go back to VLC media player
then on the right click on set this program as default
click apply and ok

restart the computer if necessary
or try with another dvd

audio cd
video cd

If it’s a bug in Windows 10, try this to see:

When you are on your session, do:
- Ctrl + ALT + Delete
From there, hold down the SHIFT key until the end of the procedure. (SHIFT is the arrow key up, at the bottom left of the keyboard)
- Click on the power button at the bottom right of the screen, click on "restart"
you are now on a blue page
release the SHIFT key
click on choose an option
troubleshoot

settings
restart (at the bottom of the window)
choose F4 (safe mode)
let Windows load
once on the desktop, the icons will be bigger
restart
try now when you are back on your normal desktop
because sometimes a simple restart in safe mode works

and check that you are an administrator on your account
right-click on the start button

you can switch to a local account to check if it works and it's easier to manage than a Microsoft account:
click on the start button
1/ settings
2/ accounts
3/ your account
4/ on your right: Sign in with a local account instead
5/ Enter the password for your Microsoft online account and click Next
6/ Choose a name for your user account (your first name, for example), a password (confirm it) and a hint to help you remember your password in case you forget it. Click Next.

Finally, click on Sign out and finish. Your current session is closed and you can log in with your local account. Your data is saved only on your computer.

Switching from a local account to a Microsoft account
click on the start button
1/ settings
2/ accounts
3/ your account
4/ Sign in to a Microsoft account
5/ Enter the email address and associated password. This includes addresses @hotmail.fr/com, @msn.fr, @live.fr/com, @outlook.fr/com
6/ Click on "Sign out" to switch back to a local account.
ps: If you do not have a Microsoft account, choose the line You don’t have an account

Dites si, lorsque vous ouvrez une vidéo (pas sur Internet) dans votre dossier vidéo par exemple, cela s'ouvre-t-il avec VLC ?  -- pistouri

Control Panel. In the search box, type Troubleshooting, then click on Troubleshooting. In the left pane, click on Show All, then click on CD, DVD, and Blu-ray Playback and Burning  -- scalpel

otherwise create a shortcut for VLC on the desktop insert your CD or DVD open the VLC shortcut then file at the top left then open a disc    -- screwdriver
