Hello everyone, I have a non-Retina MacBook Pro.
I have Microsoft Office 2011 on a CD. I installed it on my Mac. During the installation, I was offered to install Microsoft Update to regularly check for updates. The installation of Update was quite lengthy, and wanting to see immediately if Microsoft had installed properly (stupidly), I canceled the Update installation. After verifying that Microsoft was working, I wanted to find Microsoft Update on my Mac but without success.
I then decided to uninstall Microsoft Office and reinstall it so that the Update message would reappear. However, during the reinstallation, I received no Update message... Just to be sure, I performed the reinstallation a third time with still no success.
But now another issue has arisen; it seems that despite the uninstallation, my Mac is still trying to install Microsoft, which I placed in the trash. When I want to shut down the Mac, I get this message: "Install in progress": Unable to shut down your computer because a software installation is in progress (Microsoft Office). And at the bottom of the message, there is a loading bar that hasn't moved for several hours. No matter how much I try to force quit Install in progress, it won't shut down, and the message appears every time.
I wanted to try reinstalling Microsoft Office again, and before the installation, there's a message: waiting for the installation of other applications (namely Microsoft, which is already in the trash) that loads infinitely.
So here’s quite a big problem: no Microsoft Update, can't shut down the computer, and can't install Microsoft anymore...
Thank you in advance for your help!

I have the MacBook Pro (non-retina) running OS X Yosemite version 10.10.3
I have already attempted the disk repair process, nothing is reported. I tried placing the Install in progress application in the trash, but when I shut down the Mac, the application still opens with the same message.
Thank you nonetheless for your help. -
Hello,
To uninstall Office 2011, there is only one method:
this one
Any other way to proceed does not remove Office 2011, unlike earlier versions, which had an uninstaller that was simple (certainly too simple in Microsoft's eyes)
Microsoft auto update can be downloaded independently of the application.
Apple menu/force quit, not working? That's annoying! You must have an Office installation menu, try "quit" by opening that menu.

When it's urgent, it's already too late (Talleyrand) -
As indicated in the method you provided, I placed all Microsoft folders in my recycle bin and then emptied it, except for a folder titled "microsoft" containing 3 fonts that I cannot delete because I am told they are in use...
Regarding force quitting, I have no Office menu since there is no trace of the software left on my computer.-
There are definitely traces left, hidden files, preference files...
You haven't given the exact model of your MacBook Pro and the operating system.
If you're on Mac OS X 10.7 or higher, try restarting while holding down the cmd and R keys, without releasing them, until you reach the utilities page. Launch Disk Utility, select your hard drive (first line), then from the SOS menu, start a disk repair and, when it's finished, select line 2 (HD) and start a permissions repair.
Restart and see where you stand, and if there's an error message, come back and explain.
After that? That is the question! You'll wait for our Office specialist, (Master Aliboron Martin) to come by; he will explain it better than I can and will find you a solution.

Good evening,
Is there something left in the trash?
=> go to the Finder menu / Empty Trash in secure mode...
- if that fails, launch the Activity Monitor application found in Applications / Utilities... there, check the running applications, locate the one causing the problem and force it to quit by clicking the small cross in the upper left corner of the window.
If that doesn't work in normal startup mode, repeat all of this by starting the Mac without extensions, that is to say, holding down the Shift key during the entire startup phase...

P.S.: hi dede :)

Hello Francis,
The trash is completely empty. However, I finally found in System then Library, folders containing the word Microsoft. Before putting them in the trash, I wanted to ask you if they only concern Microsoft (because I have a doubt about the "Microsoft Internet Explorer" folders)
Here is a screenshot:
I also followed your procedure in Activity Monitor, the application closes when I force quit it but still comes back when I try to shut down the computer.
I can't really hold down Shift during startup because I can't even turn off the computer, so no reboot... -
Hello,
Isn't it surprising to see "visible" Microsoft files in System / Library...?
The presence of these files is "normal," but they should be in hidden mode.
I do have a Microsoft folder, visible, in
Hard Drive / Library / Application Support / Microsoft, but this only contains 2 items... including the infamous Microsoft AutoUpdate, which might be worth deleting...
and another Microsoft folder in
Hard Drive / Users / my_name / Library / Application Support / Microsoft
and in
Hard Drive / Users / my_name / Library / Preferences / Microsoft
Optionally, if you have installed MS Office fonts, you might also find a Microsoft folder here:
Hard Drive / Library / Fonts / Microsoft
For startup auto-launching, apart from the Microsoft AutoUpdate file,
Check for any "suspicious" files in:
Hard Drive / Library / LaunchDaemons
Hard Drive / Library / LaunchAgents
Hard Drive / System / Library / LaunchDaemons
Hard Drive / System / Library / LaunchAgents
Hard Drive / System / Library / StartupItems
Hard Drive / Library / StartupItems
To force the computer to shut down, you need to hold the power button for several seconds...

Hello, from your first capture I deleted the first two with com.microsoft.
Should I delete the others?
Otherwise, I don't have any trace left in the folders you indicated (including Microsoft update) and none that seem suspicious in the others either.
And I’ve already tried the on/off button without success, the message "install in progress" appears. -
I also specify that I do not have a Library folder in Hard Drive, Users, my name.
-
If you have this library, otherwise you wouldn't be able to use the Mac, but by default this library is hidden. You can access it from the Go menu in Finder by holding down the Option key at the same time.
In the latest version of OS X, you can also make this library permanently visible by going to its directory (the little house), and by right-clicking, requesting to Show View Options, then checking the appropriate box. -
Indeed, the folder was hidden, so I was able to delete two Microsoft folders from two locations. Apparently, there should only be those that I showed in my screenshot left, and I don't know whether I should delete them or not.
-
What you see in your screenshot are files that I also have, but these are normally hidden files, so you shouldn't be able to see them. But especially, as I said, these files are not located at the very root of the Library subfolder found in the System folder. Pay close attention to my screenshots.
-
And I have already tried the on/off button without success, the message install in progress appears.
When we press and hold the power button, the Mac always ends up shutting down, even if an application is running or a message appears. This is a "hardware" shutdown.

Indeed, I hadn't dared to hold the on/off button for long. The computer turned off and upon restarting, I tested turning off the computer again and the message "Install in progress" was no longer there! Now, the question remains whether when reinstalling Office, I will still get the message "waiting for applications to install." I'll do it tonight as I don't have the disk here.
Thank you very much for your help.

So if I understood correctly, deleting them won’t solve my problem?
These files must be located elsewhere if they are present. They should be in the same place as they are on my machine. At this point, I don’t know if they are duplicates (if they exist in the correct locations), in which case they can be deleted, or if they are files that have been moved by some action I am unaware of.
In reality, I know nothing about the history of this Mac. If other unfortunate manipulations have been made in the Library or System folders, that could explain the initial problem related to the installation.
=> Do the operation I indicated to turn off this Mac. Press and hold the power button until the Mac turns off. It will eventually turn off.
Then, follow the entire procedure that follows:
- Press the cmd and R keys and don’t let go, press the power button, still keeping the cmd and R keys pressed down.
Do not release these keys until the OS X utilities are displayed on the screen, which indicates that the Mac has started from its recovery partition.
Then:
- launch Disk Utility
- repair the disk,
then
- repair permissions.
- Quit Disk Utility
- Quit the OS X Utilities
- Restart the Mac normally
See this procedure in detail here: (it also applies to OS X 10.10)
