Hello,
When transferring with my external 3.0 hard drive, I reach a maximum speed of 15-20 MB/s...
So transferring 70 GB takes about 1h20...
Why is that happening?
Note that my HDD is indeed USB 3.0, and I plug it into a USB 3 port (blue). It's a WD Elements 1To.
Note also that my PC is brand new, only a week old!
I am using Windows 8.1.
Finally, in Device Manager, there are no warning points... The drivers seem up to date!
Thanks for your help.

Good evening,
I don’t have a solution to offer you at the moment, but here is some information that may guide you:
- I ran tests on a WD My Passport external 1 TB disk (USB 3.0) for a 1.5 GB HD movie located on my computer’s hard drive. The copy to the WD USB finishes in exactly 30 seconds (with antivirus). That’s about 3 GB per minute. These results are significantly higher than yours...
- Your problem isn’t easy to identify because it can stem from your USB drive (and the USB 3.0 port) but also from access to your local hard drive. To try to identify the issue, download the USBDeview tool at the following link:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html
Be sure to choose the 32-bit or 64-bit version according to your computer’s architecture. This tool lets you identify all connected USB ports and drives and also run read/write tests on an external USB drive or key.
From my side, the results for this WD My Passport external drive are: 52 MB/s write and 72 MB/s read. You’ll see that the 52 MB/s write result corresponds to a 3 GB per minute transfer (thus very consistent with the file copy test I performed).
If your results are around these two values (approximately...), the problem would come from reading your local hard drive and the transfer process to the USB 3 port. If the results are well below these values, the issues could be with the USB 3 port or your WD external drive. With this tool, you can bypass the local hard drive.
Difficult to say more at the moment.
Best regards.
