Hello,
I have a problem installing Windows 98SE on a Compaq Armada 4150T laptop
Pentium 150MMX processor - 32 MB of RAM - 2 GB HDD
It seems that the floppy drive is dead.
The CD-ROM drive is left.
Actually, I wanted to reset everything because the floppy drive kept saying:
"The floppy disk in drive A is not formatted.
Do you want to format it now?
YES - NO"
No matter which floppy disk was used
And when I tried to format, I got a message saying it couldn't be done
(I forgot the exact text).
No matter which floppy disk was used
Even though I could see files from another machine
And I didn't know if it was the drive that was dead or some setting that was wrong.
I, of course, looked in the "Device Manager" but everything seemed okay.
So I formatted the HDD.
I started by formatting partition D:\ without difficulty.
Maybe I shouldn't have done that, right?
Then I had to look in Help to find out how to format C:\
(Restart by holding Control and then selecting "DOS Mode Only"
(I can't even remember; it was choice 5, I think. There were 7 choices.
then type format c: at the prompt)
So it formatted everything.
I was ready for the reinstallation of Windows 98SE on a clean disk, but I had this message:
"Invalid system disk
I/O error
Replace it and press a key"
So I would like to know if it is possible to install Windows 98SE just from the CD-ROM
Without using a boot floppy
Moreover, it should be said that the BIOS (Version 1.30B) seems completely outdated
(And I suppose it's impossible to update it until Windows is installed).
I looked everywhere,
No way to select boot from the CD-ROM drive only.
However, I still have access to it, so if you need more info ...
If anyone can help me
Thank you very much because this machine drives my HP scanner and my Lexmark Z11 printer
Because on top of that, I have a problem with the scanner on my laptop with XP
But I'll deal with that later.
PS: I have a PC running 3.11 for Workgroups with a parallel port and a working floppy drive.
The Compaq also has a parallel port.
I have a floppy disk that says:
"LapLink Pro 4.0a
WinLink
Lap to Desk"
Another one that says:
"ARJ 2.50a
WINARJ"
I also have 2 sheets with numbers that seem to correspond to the pinouts to be made
But since there’s nothing more written …
I'm lost …
(No diagram of the pin numbering!)
I have several parallel cables.
If that can help?
But you'll need to hold my hand here because I don't want to make any more mistakes.
Oh yes, one more thing:
1) I have an external floppy drive with a USB port
2) The floppy drive of the Compaq can be removed by pushing a little thing on the side
3) The Compaq comes with a Docking Station
(I don't know what else it can be used for other than supporting the CD drive, a MIDI port, and 2 extra speakers)
4) There are 2 PCMCIA slots on the part with the keyboard, screen, touchpad.
There you have some information!
I'm continuing to search on my end ...
Thanks again for any upcoming help ... I hope

Theoretically, the Win98SE CD is bootable, so you need to boot from it to install W98.
If necessary, you may have to set the CD drive as the first boot option in the BIOS.
Then at startup, you will have:
- Install Windows from CD
- Start with CD support
First, choose "Start with CD support" and then type fdisk to create your partitions and format them.
Then restart and choose "Install Windows from CD."

"Invalid disk system"
This message appears because the PC is trying to boot from the hard drive and since it is empty :/
In the BIOS, you need to look for an option regarding the boot sequence or something like that.

Hello,
To summarize:
- floppy drive is dead
- booting from CD is not offered by the BIOS (old machine)
- nothing left on the disk
In my opinion, the only solution is to remove the disk, connect it to another machine (either replacing the existing disk or via a USB/IDE 2.5 adapter), format it to FAT32 + system, and copy the installation directory of the Win98 CD (the one containing the .cab files) onto it. Then, put the disk back into the original PC, boot from it, and run the install.exe or setup.exe contained in the copied directory that includes the .cab files.
Best regards

Hello,
The right solution is to install Windows from the installation CD.
No need for a floppy disk, this CD is bootable. But for it to be recognized, you need to make sure it's set as the first boot in the BIOS.
To enter the BIOS, at startup of the PC, you need to press the Delete key when the first lines appear. This is the most common case, but sometimes it's different.
It depends on the BIOS, but it's often indicated either immediately after the first lines or at the bottom of the screen with something like Press Del for settings (Del in English = Suppr in French).
You will see a screen with around a dozen pages offered.
There, you will need to find the page where the boot order setting is located, often the second line of the left column.
For the first boot, choose CD-ROM.
For the second, Floppy.
For the third, IDE 0 or IDE 1, depending on the case: 0 if there is IDE 0 and 1; 1 if there is IDE 1 and IDE 2.
Press Escape to go back to the previous page.
Press the F10 key to save the changes. Window Save and exit? (Y = yes)
Press Enter. And your PC will boot from the installation CD.
And you will just have to follow the instructions from Windows.

To err is human, to persist is diabolical.

Thank you very much for your contributions,
it's my turn to send cherry pits:
to enter the BIOS of my laptop it's F10
but you should see how the BIOS looks!
There are even huge mistakes like:
primary disk 1
secondary disk 2
secondary disk 1
secondary disk 2
for example (do you see it? the mistake?)
well, I'm not an expert
but I’ve looked at this BIOS 200 times from every angle
I really see nothing that resembles a boot choice from the CD
not even from afar
unless ... from veeeeery far ...
like choosing a line of numbers and letters with IRQ + a number at the end
we'll see
I read on another site that the CD-ROM drive might be on a different base
I don't understand what that means
if you have a hint, thank you!
it's true that the solution of removing the disk to revive it from a running machine ...
well, I still hope ...
I should specify that the floppy drive makes noise when I turn it on
that I hear the floppy disk spinning
but nothing
the CD-ROM also spins
it goes WiiiiiizzzZzZzZzZzZZZZZZzZzZzZzzz - - -
otherwise there is a little blinking line below the message but how to write there?
Oh yes! Also!
I can no longer switch to uppercase or numbers from the built-in keyboard
I'm forced to stay on the external keyboard I plugged in via PS2 ages ago
Plus, what's annoying is that I won't have a budget for parts for a while
well, I’ll head out now, I’m going to relax a bit because I'm starting to get tense like a rock
thanks again

One more thing:
I have confirmed through the INSPECT function
that is found after pressing F10 to enter the BIOS that the files
command.com
config.sys
autoexec.bat
are missing
I don’t understand why my floppy drive doesn't read floppies anymore even though it still seems to be working.

Well, okay, apart from that I would like a more detailed explanation on how to reinstall Windows 98SE by connecting the 2GB hard drive from my laptop to another machine,

The detail of the menus of these last 5 buttons as soon as I have the courage.
And just in case it’s enough…
Bye! Enjoy your meal! Have a good evening! Good night! …
Well no, that's not enough, in everything you've indicated, there's nothing about the boot order.
I don't understand why my floppy disk drive isn't reading disks anymore even though it still seems to be working ==> Read head failure!!! The main cause of this type of failure is a disk removed from the drive while it was still spinning (light on or blinking).

Hello. Here I am back after 2 days away.
As you said, as TazDevil notices, and I after you two, nothing on the boot order.
But I don’t think there’s anything more regarding what you haven’t developed. Since it’s a “home” BIOS, we can expect anything.
The boot order is presumably set once and for all, with no possible modification:
1-Floppy
2-CD-ROM
3-IDE
If there’s nothing inserted in the drives, or if everything behaves as if there’s nothing, the boot takes place from the HDD.
2nd line of buttons: Next to the square button on the left
(The button represents 1 CD, 1 diskette, 1 floppy drive):
(Title, in bold:) Storage units
(Details, in light:) A: 1.44 Mo (3.5 inches)
B: Not installed
Primary disk 1: 2066.0 Mo
(By clicking on it (Watch out for the branches) I get a small window titled:)
Storage units
(A box topped with the title:) Storage unit A:
Not installed
..........
- 1.44 Mo (3.5 inches)
The floppy drive being considered as out of order, we skip it.
(A box topped with the title:) Hard disk unit(s):
Primary disk 1 Type 65 (2066.0 Mo)
Secondary disk 2 (If! If! NDLR) Not installed
Secondary disk 1 Not installed
Secondary disk 2 Not installed
(!!! There’s nothing to check here)
(Then a long gray button titled)
Configure hard disk units
(If I click on it, I get a window titled):
Configure hard disk units:
(A box topped with the title:) Hard disk unit(s):
- Primary disk 1 Type 65 (2066.0 Mo)
Secondary disk 2 (If! If! NDLR) Not installed
Secondary disk 1 Not installed
Secondary disk 2 Not installed
The CD drive doesn’t appear, which explains why there’s no way to boot from it. In Configure the units... Have you tried modifying primary disk 2 (the false secondary disk 2)?
(Then a long gray button titled)
Operating system type:
(If I click on it, I get a small window titled):
Unit type: 65:
(Then a box titled:)
Operating system type:
DOS or DOS and Windows
- Other operating systems
(I exit by:) OK
(!!! To those who will tell me that this is where it needs to be changed, that doesn’t work
and I have to turn off, remove the backup battery, turn it back on,
choose F1 to get the default values, go back into the BIOS, re-enter the date,
search for something else)
Indeed, if you hadn’t tried that, that’s what I would have suggested!
The rest of your BIOS doesn’t seem to have any relevance in this case: Input devices, Security, Power, Audio, it’s totally different.
In conclusion, I see only one thing: try to ensure that the CD drive is recognized so that you can boot from it.
See you later.

I haven't read the whole post, but if I understood correctly, you can't change the boot order? Well, I think you just need to unplug your floppy drive, remove it completely, or disable it.

So, apart from replacing the floppy disk drive (or the solution of copying the system files and the installation files of Win98 by installing the hard drive on another PC), I don't see any other solution.
For your information, a laptop of this type in perfect working condition goes for around 60 euros!!! Just barely more expensive than a replacement floppy disk drive for this PC ;-)

"Invalid disk system
I/O error
Replace it and press a key"
Otherwise, I can go into the BIOS but I can't find anything that allows me to boot from the CD.
I can remove the floppy disk drive by simply pressing a small button located on the right side of the laptop
from there I have access to the connector of this drive
