Hello everyone.
I am trying to install Windows 98SE on a Pentium III
I used a Windows 98 startup disk which created a virtual drive D and set E as the CD ROM drive.
When I go to E, which file should I choose on the CD to start Windows 98 and install it on the computer?
Could you please explain the process to me precisely because I'm not a computer pro.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR RESPONSES.

Logically, the Windows 98 SE CD is bootable, so you just need to enter your BIOS and set the CD drive to boot first. You remove your boot disk and leave the CD in the drive, and logically when you start up, the CD should launch and offer you the installation.
Otherwise, the file to choose is in "CD-ROM drive"\win98\install.exe

Hi, I also want to install Win 98:
1: I have Win 98 1st edition
2: My CD drive no longer works on my laptop
3: My floppy drive works and I just launched a boot disk on it.
Question: Is there a solution, using floppy disks, to install Win 98, therefore without using the Win 98 CD? If yes, how can I create these disks?

Hello,
Kmanber is right.
I have the Windows 98SE installation CD. I tried it and it started well with install + Enter.
It also starts with install.exe
Bye.

Hi titoof,
And you, where are you in the middle of these discussions?
If you haven't managed to install it yet, you must be wondering how you're going to get it done.
To get everyone on the same page, when you get to the E: prompt, type dir and hit Enter. You'll see about ten lines, maybe a bit more.
Note the labels (just the left column, with any possible extensions: exe, inf, txt, ...) and write the list here.
I think it will help get everyone on the same page.

Hello everyone.
I'm surprised and happy to have received so many responses to my problem, and I thank you for that. My problem is resolved.
It was certainly an error on my part, but as I mentioned, I'm not a pro in computing.
I used a Windows 98 SE boot disk that allowed me to access root E. From there, I did as instructed. I managed to start Windows 98 SE by going into the WIN 98SE files and then install.
It's all good. It's great. I'm happy with the attention you have given to my problem, which is solved thanks to the forum.
I want to clarify that the CD drive didn't start automatically. I had to access the WIN 98 SE files and then install.
THANK YOU ALL.

... which suggests that, as anoa said, your CD is bootable and you could have done without the boot disk!
Bye.

No, you won't find Win98 on floppy disks. Don't put the cart before the horse: changing your CD drive is the only solution

Hello,
insert the startup disk into its drive
start the PC
select "with CD drive support" (using the numeric keys)
confirm by pressing the "Enter" key
a:\> appears on the screen.
Insert the Windows 98 CD
After a:\> type c: then press enter.
c:\> format c: to format the hard drive.
After the formatting, if the PC doesn't restart automatically, restart your PC: ALT+CTRL+DEL.
Your screen will display A:\> type the name of your CD drive E or D for example.
Type D then enter.
D:\> win_98_se then enter
D:\> install then enter.
A message will display: click enter to start the installation or escape to cancel.
And follow the installation.

Hello,
I'm having trouble reinstalling Windows 98SE after formatting the C drive (which I decided not to name after formatting). The computer shows ms tool.exe when I start it with a floppy disk. Also, when I turn it on, I don't have a choice; it shows a dis.system error. Please insert disk. So I put in my floppy disk, it starts loading but then it just frustrates me because I don't know anything about it. I tried messing around to start with the CD but it says boot failure without even launching.
To keep it simple: Windows 98SE starts fine with the floppy but stops at that infamous message ms.tools not found.
I have the master CDs, the Windows keys, everything, but since I don't understand anything, I feel like I'm struggling for no reason:
help!

stop using a floppy disk! take a Windows 98 SE CD and boot from the CD-ROM, you'll avoid a lot of problems...
Hello,
I have a little problem with Win98:
-I'm on the E:\ drive; what should I do???
Because logically, even if the name of the directory has changed and I type it, nothing happens..
Could you help me?

Your request is not very clear.
I assume you are at the end of the creation of the virtual disk C using either a boot disk or the installation CD-ROM.
In the simplest case, at this stage, the drive E is the CD-ROM drive.
With Windows 98, you type install + Enter to start the installation.
With Windows 98 SE, you type cd win98 + Enter and the prompt becomes E:\win98>
At this prompt, you type install + Enter to start the installation.

To err is human, to persist is devilish.

I haven't solved my problem.
When I type dir in E: which should correspond to my CD drive, I see:
volume in drive E is WIN _ 98 _ SE
F_ _ <DIR>
I did as you instructed:
E:\> win98\install.exe
The following message appears
Incorrect command or non-file.
Do you have a solution?
Thank you
Once you're in E:, type cd WIN _ 98 _ SE with a space after cd and then just type install.
Some are bootable, probably the latest releases, but many are not.
Bye.
Typing cd win_98_se assumes that there is a win_98_se directory on the installation CD. However, there isn't one.
Bye.
The only non-bootable ones are the Windows 98 that are not marked SE.
However, it is abnormal that your screen displays _ everywhere: the only true path is "CD-ROM:\win98\install.exe", otherwise it is a foreign or improperly copied Win98.
