Hello
I would like to install Windows 98 on an old PC (previously, there was XP on this machine but it was too heavy)... I did c:/format from the startup disk and then inserted the W98 CD. The W98 installation starts and stops during the "preparation for installation" with this error message:
"detection message during installation
Error SU0013
The installer cannot create files on your MS-DOS boot drive and cannot install Windows 98.
If you have HPFS or NTFS, create an MS-DOS boot partition. If you have a LANtastic network or SuperStor compression, disable it and run the installer. Consult Install.txt on the installation disk #1 or the Windows 98 CD-ROM."
There are 2 hard drives on this PC.
Thank you for your help
Fred

Use a boot disk and fdisk. Delete the non-DOS partition. Recreate one, don't forget to activate it. Restart at each step. See here for more details:

Hi Zemp!
You're everywhere, aren't you!
Here is Fred ("we must save Maxtor")
So what exactly do I need to do?

Well, you need to delete the partition and create a new one that you will format as fat32. Also, if you have another partition or hard drive formatted as ntfs, the problem might come from there. The solution is to remove that partition or hard drive which, in any case, will not be readable with 98.

98 does not manage NTFS, it needs to be formatted in FAT32.

Hi!
Here it is! I managed to format, set it to FAT32, and install W98, but another problem has arisen! First, in My Computer, I only see a 2GB hard drive (!). However, there should normally be a 6GB one as well (it's an old PC that I want to use in my room for word processing). My Computer also doesn't recognize the CD burner... how can I make them appear, please?
Secondly, it's impossible to install the drivers... the CD is properly inserted in the drive, but the device driver update assistant can't find it, even when specifying the location (CDrom, without further details since I don't know which file is needed). If I click on the Dell Resource CD, I can see a folder named "drivers"...
Thank you!
P.S.: it's not impossible that I messed something up with fdisk!...

Your partition should have been no more than 32GB :)
beyond that XP does not manage fat32
