Linux Mint installs automatically in live mode without a USB stick!!!!!!!

Solved

Hello,
I don't know where to post my problem that feels like science fiction!!...
For the past week, I've been trying out Linux. And I'm trying to get used to the Console (the negative side of Linux, for me...)
Last night, I tried to install Linux Mint on an eeepc. I powered on the old HP Packard - Vista (in addition to being a work tool!!) to format the USB drive and download the Linux Mint ISO.
The last action = updating Linux Live Creator.... Suddenly, the computer went haywire, the screen started flickering (lines, colors)... and I could see "Linux Mint" with its logo...
I turned it off using the power button.
This morning.... BITTER SURPRISE:
- The computer boots to Linux Mint, which I don't necessarily appreciate
- My files are there
- When I press "esc"... Boot appears but in qwerty
- I went into the BIOS... I only see "usb" (disk - USB drive...)
- The best part, the computer boots from the USB drive without having a USB drive connected!!!
-
Is it possible to restore Vista in dual boot, that's what I intended to do before this disaster.???

THANK YOU in advance for your help....

Configuration: Linux / Firefox 28.0

Hello,
Linux couldn't install itself on your PC: first, you need to launch the installer program, then choose the type of installation, and finally confirm before the installation begins... So unless you click OK without reading what's written, what you're describing couldn't have happened on its own.

First thing, remove the USB drive containing Mint and let me know if your PC still boots into Mint.

Thank you for your reply;
Read the problem again... And you'll see that I don't have a "connected" key!!
It starts from the USB and NOT installed!!
Moreover, I didn't install anything on my own. I just downloaded the Linux Mint ISO and didn't even have time to mount the image and boom... The screen started going crazy, but I occasionally saw "Linux Mint."
It's crazy... unless the computer woke up and booted from the connected USB! But I just formatted it on Windows.
No matter.
How can I recover a dual boot Windows / Linux Mint?
Thank you.

Hi,

Reread the problem... And you'll see that I don't have a "connected" key!!
It starts from the key and NOT installed!!
If it starts from Mint and your key is not connected, then the system has been installed on the hard drive ;-(

Moreover, if we reread your first post, you do mention:
The last action = update of Linux live creator... Suddenly, the computer goes wild, the screen starts flickering (lines, colors)... and I saw "Linux Mint" with the logo...
I turned it off using the power button.
Which looks a lot like a manipulation error and an installation on the hard drive instead of on the key;-(

Zipe ... I haven't installed anything .!!
I still know how to create and boot a system lol.
It's true that HP Packard is known for having issues with waking from sleep... but to the point of booting by itself??
I turned it on long enough to format a USB drive and then I decided to create everything with LiLi and boot from a little Asus.
It's crazy...! I'm also looking for what happened behind my back
So, do you have a solution for:
- Removing this "fictitious" USB drive... because it boots from a NON-connected USB drive
- Restoring Dual Boot??

Thanks

If your USB key is not connected, then it is installed. But once again, it didn't install itself magically; you had to click at least the "install now" button (Install now if the interface was in English).
No matter how you stumbled your way here, open the terminal and type the following command so we can see if Windows is still there or if it has been overwritten:
sudo fdisk -l
(letter L) and paste the result here.

I decided to create everything with LiLi, and boot on a little Asus
Indeed, the mistake may be there, confusing the name of a disk with that of a USB key ;-(

Hello,

Given this:
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id. System
/dev/sda1 63 146400344 73200141 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT
/dev/sda2 * 146400345 156296384 4948020 c W95 FAT32 (LBA)

I would have simply reset the boot flag on sda1 (the Vista partition), then repaired the mbr with the Vista DVD (bootrec /fixmbr and bootrec /fixboot) to get Vista to boot again. Then, I would have removed the fat32 partition where Lili probably installed her files instead of the USB (user error and not due to sleep mode).

As for the Linux installation on the external HDD:
Disk /dev/mapper/ubuntu--vg-root: 78.7 GB, 78701920256 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9568 cylinders, total 153714688 sectors

The /mapper/ directory indicates that the installation of Ubuntu was done with the LVM (Logical Volume Manager) option. Evidence here:
dev/sdb5 501760 156301311 77899776 8e LVM Linux

Personally, I find this choice average. The LVM format is quite complicated to manage, and according to the Ubuntu site, it is moderately (and that's an understatement) reliable.

But I'm probably saying all this a bit late.

Thank you ikewdu,
"Not late at all" ... That's kind of what Jns55 tried to explain to me in "simpler terms," since I'm just starting out. Don't worry, it always helps someone who doesn't dare to ask.
I reinstalled everything following the "Jns55 tutorial"....
But I admit that my HP, as beautiful and sturdy as it is, has a wake-up issue (known) and recently, a USB key connection problem. In fact, while thinking of stopping the installation, I was just confirming (okay - okay).... Read the question: "the screen became unreadable (color play) and I could occasionally see the Linux Mint logo, but I didn't understand, because I was making the USB key for another computer!! and Vista had to be removed anyway: a pain /Windows

Have a good day.
