Kernel32.dll - Windows 98 SE

Hello everyone,
at startup of Windows 98 SE, I get an "explorer" error window (with the red cross) indicating:

EXPLORER has caused a page fault in
module KERNEL32.DLL at 0187:bffc06af.

The application that is about to be loaded cannot therefore be loaded. And this is the case for all applications. Internet Explorer, Outlook, Microsoft Word...

The only workaround to launch Internet Explorer is to go to the Control Panel and click on any icon; the previous message appears, but a second one also appears: a warning message (with the yellow triangle) indicating that it is Internet Explorer that has caused an internal fault.
After that, the Windows folder explorer crashes on its own, and I can open Internet Explorer.

From these messages, I thought of uninstalling or repairing Internet Explorer 6. The repair didn't work. So I reverted to version 5, which crashes quite a bit since it has no updates. And I can no longer go back to version 6 because installing a program necessarily requires launching an application of the Windows Installer type or something else, which is impossible...

What can I do other than format and reinstall Windows 98?
How can I fix this kernel32.dll failure?
Thank you in advance.
TOM999

PS: I no longer have the Windows 98SE CD available.
Configuration: Windows 98 Internet Explorer 5.0

Hi,

for your problem, here are two solutions to try, as it could be a memory stick issue "I had this case under Win98".

1- install Firefox as your browser, you won't be disappointed and plus, the solution is free. If the problem is gone with Firefox, that's a relief; if not, move on to the next step.

2- test your memory sticks with the Memtest utility (free). It comes in several versions: bootable CD, floppy disk, and even for bootable USB stick.

If errors are found during the test, you can replace the memory sticks. If there are no errors, you need to check for viruses.

Thank you for the help.
I managed to install Firefox; unfortunately, like most applications, Windows often fails to launch it.
Regarding the memory, Memtest doesn't seem to find any errors; I will try to look for viruses...

Additional information:
Windows is therefore having difficulty launching almost any application, from Internet Explorer to the slightest dialog box, including Microsoft office applications.
So I think there is an issue with the Windows system.

However, everything works perfectly in safe mode, but of course, then I no longer have my internet connection (USB livebox), nor access to CD-ROMs, burners...

There you go.
Feel free to suggest any possible leads.
Thanks in advance

Install Firefox on your PC. Even if you decide not to keep it, it will allow you to browse the Internet while you wait for your troubles with IE to be over.

You can download it here, for example, https://www.zebulon.fr/telechargements/internet-reseau/navigateurs/firefox.html on another PC.
And using a CD or a USB stick, you can install it on your PC.

Thank you for the help,
I installed Firefox, but like any Windows application, it struggles to launch. The same message appears as stated before, "explorer (or any other program for that matter) has caused a fault in the kernel32.dll module."
This is why I think it’s more about a general Windows issue.

I would like to uninstall Internet Explorer to reinstall it, but I'm afraid I won't be able to do it. It’s already the case with IE6. I went back to version 5.5 (which works terribly badly, by the way, as there are no updates), and since reverting back to version 6 requires launching an application (ie6setup.exe), I can't do it (always the same error message).

There you go.
Always here to listen!!

To go back to your problem, if in safe mode you no longer have this issue, you should check if it's not a device that is causing it.

Did you make any changes... just before this issue, installed a new device... software, etc...?
