Hello,
Since yesterday, I have an issue with my Toshiba Satellite C660 running Windows 7: it won't start anymore. When I turn it on, I get the Toshiba logo, then a black screen with a cursor blinking in the top left corner, and then nothing until the message saying HDD boot failed.
I don't know much about computers, so I'm reaching out to you to find a solution to my problem... I've already looked at other messages on the forum, but so far nothing has worked (I tried F8 to start in safe mode, 0 for repair, but nothing).
At the moment the logo appears, it only offers me to press either F2 to enter the setup or F12 for the BIOS. In short, I admit that I'm not sure how to proceed.
Of course, I just moved, and I can't find the recovery CDs I made when I bought the PC. My boyfriend gave me a Recovery CD, but it's from an HP computer, and when I insert it into my laptop, it says it's not compatible.
What can I try in your opinion?
For your information, yesterday morning, my antivirus Avira asked me to do an update that I had never seen before... Could this be the issue?
Thank you very much for your help!

Hello...
" press F2 to enter setup or F12 for the BIOS ": strange, isn't it... the setup and the BIOS are pretty much the same, but whatever...!
Enter the BIOS and check if your hard drive appears...then set the defaults, save the changes and boot...

Thank you for your reply, poupougne13.
My bad, the F12 key takes me to the "Boot Menu," not the BIOS... In my haste, I misread, sorry.
The hard drive does appear in the BIOS, I reset the default values and restarted, but nothing has changed. -
Is the hard drive at the top of the list?
No USB key, CD, or SD card in the machine?

Yes, the hard drive is indeed the first one.
Yesterday, when I tried to use my friend's recovery CD, I set the CD drive as the first boot device, but after failing, I switched the hard drive back to the first position.
And no, there are no USB drives, CDs, or anything else in the computer... -
Do you have any documents you can't afford to lose on the machine, or do you not mind losing everything?
You should have a "recovery" partition that would restore the machine to its factory state...with F9 or F12....

No, I've made backups elsewhere, I can afford to lose what's on the computer, it's not a big deal.
F9 doesn't do anything... What should I do once I've pressed F12 and I'm in the boot menu?
Thank you for your help. -
Tell me the options you have in the boot please

"That's my bad": very good! ;)
You can also try this: take out the battery, unplug the power cord and hold the power button for 30 seconds... release it, only plug the power cord back in and start... if necessary, you can also put the battery back in and start...
See you later

Hello
I would start by inserting a live Linux CD into the drive to take a closer look at what's going on with my disk. On this PC, the first thing to do after purchase is to create the recovery disks, the second is to install a proper antivirus. If there's a virus on the boot sector, you'll have exactly this issue; if that's the case, it's likely that no repair will be possible. The live CD will at least allow for the recovery of user files.
Good luck! -
