Font styles for sending messages

I am using Thunderbird version 24.5.0.5227. I have configured the desired font for sending messages. I have done this configuration a hundred times, modified it, and I have NEVER been able to get the intended font. Why? Even when writing a message, in the "font" box, I look for the same font or another font... it always stays the same, nothing changes, it's as if the initial font set by Thunderbird remains stuck, I cannot change it. All email systems (Outlook, Outlook Express...) allow using the font of your choice, but not Thunderbird... why? And most importantly, how can I finally write a message in the font of my choice?
Thank you for directing me to a solution.
Hélène.

    hello
Are the emails well written in HTML?
And is the font chosen in Tools -> Options -> Composition: HTML?

Yes, obviously. In plain text, there is only the character "Courier New", and I know that to use different fonts, colors, italics, or bold, you need "rich text", or better yet, HTML.
I'm still stuck with my problem, I still don't understand why Thunderbird doesn't respect what we ask for!
    Thank you.

Yes, and in all my Windows folders... my default font is Comic Sans MS, this is the case in both local and special mail folders, and even in the titles of the desktop icons... although that has nothing to do with it!!! It’s purely a Thunderbird issue, where everything is set up correctly....
I don't know what to do anymore?
    Thank you.
