Hello,

Like many people at the moment, I need to migrate a desktop computer from Windows XP to a newer OS. The computer in question is a bit old (about 7 years) and has somewhat limited specifications (see below), so I turned to Windows 7 32-bit.

The specifications:
Processor: Intel Pentium D CPU 3.40GHz
RAM: 1 GB
Hard Drive: Maxtor STM3160211AS 160GB 7200RPM

To do this, I decided to use a bootable USB drive. I had already used this USB drive to install Windows 8.1 on another PC. The drive was formatted using Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool and an ISO of Windows 7 32/64bit obtained from Dreamspark thanks to my school. The process is classic: I insert the USB drive, change the boot order, and start the installation.

Problem: after clicking on "Install now", a message appears:
"A CD/DVD driver is missing. If you have a diskette, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive containing the driver, insert it now."

After conducting some research, the leads indicate either a poorly formatted USB drive or a faulty ISO. So, I tried with Unetbootin, and then with another ISO, but the result was always the same. Another more radical attempt, I completely removed the CD/DVD drive from the tower, and surprisingly, I am still asked for the infamous driver.

I admit I’m a bit out of ideas for resolving this issue. Do you have any leads?

Thanks in advance.

Here it is, Windows 7 is installed and running well. Well, it's a bit challenging with 1GB of RAM but we'll deal with that later.

I found the error message in English, which allowed me to broaden my searches and come across this post https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-hardware/a-required-cddvd-device-driver-is-missing-usb/61eda679-66cc-4512-b175-d02871394461

Basically, once I'm asked for a driver, I need to cancel the installation process, remove the USB stick, plug it into another port, and restart the installation. Miracle, it works! Apparently, this is due to the fact that, at the moment of starting the install, the installation utility loses the connection with the USB port it booted from.

In any case, it works. Thank you Kinavira for your support :-).

I confirm I had the same problem, just plug the USB key into another port and it's good to go.

I also confirm, we need to change the port... I was plugging my USB stick into a 3.0 port and when I put it in a 2.0 port everything worked... bingo.

Yeah, I wasn't really believing anymore! On mine, I didn't have USB3 so I can't be mistaken.

Changing the port worked for me too! Well done and thanks for the answer!
