Hello everyone,
After long searches, I couldn't find an answer to my question, so here it is.
I want to create my own numbering in Word. Let me explain:
- my entire document is numbered 1, 2, 3, ...
- for my appendices, I want the pages of Appendix A1 to be numbered A1, A2, A3, ...
- for Appendix B2, it should be B1, B2, B3, ...
- etc.
For now, the trick I'm using is to create numbering 1, 2, 3, ... to which I add a letter in front, and the result is good. However, there is one problem!! In my automatically generated table of contents, it shows 1, 2, 3, ... removing the letters.
Does anyone have a solution or a link to another post where this problem is solved?
Thank you in advance
Florent

First of all, thank you very much for your response.
1) For me, you need to press alt+F9 (not shift), I'm not sure if it varies by version (I'm using 2007).
2) And by adding A in front of {PAGE...\*.MERGEFORMAT}, which gives "A{PAGE...\*.MERGEFORMAT}", I end up with the same problem. The format is correct, but it doesn't display the A in the table of contents.

Hello,
Start by displaying the footer or header of your pagination depending on your case; just add your A in each section
same for the second section, etc...
and close your footer
or (double click on one of your paginations
activate your page number with a simple click while pressing the Shift key and the F9 function key
which will display {PAGE...\*.MERGEFORMAT}, you just need to add the desired letter in front of the first pagination of each section
switch back to display mode by doing Shift and the F9 key again and close the page mode

Re,
Yes, that’s exactly what I’m doing. So I get A{PAGE...\*.MERGEFORMAT}. As mentioned earlier, I get exactly the structure I want, but Word doesn’t consider the “A” as part of the numbering. So in my table of contents, I have:
Appendix A1..................................1
instead of
Appendix A1..................................A1
Is there a way to insert the A into the {} with a structure like {A+PAGE...\*.MERGEFORMAT} so that it understands that the numbering is A1 and not just 1 with an A hanging in front??
Thank you for the quick responses.

Hi,
No, when you activate the footer for example, you can right-click on the pagination and Page Number Format
several types of pagination are possible but not customization, because I imagine you want to automatically retrieve the pagination for a table of contents, right?

Exactly, since the table of contents is automatic (and I do not want to redo it manually, it's too large and keeps changing), it is essential that Word accepts all the "A1, A2, A3, ..." as numbering...
I feel like I will have to settle for the pre-made numbering from Word. If anyone else has a solution, I'm always open to suggestions.
Thank you, Mike, I didn't know about alt+F9 anyway.

Re,
try this trick, activate your pagination, in the Tools ribbon in the header and footer/page layout/ click on QuickPart/AutoText/Word should suggest an initial based on your declared initials, click on it.
this initial should be placed before the pagination, change it to an A in the first section, I haven't tested further

Re,
It's a good try but it considers field A and field 1 as two different fields. There's still nothing appearing in the table of contents as a result...
I tried several similar tricks like using a numbering system A, B, C followed by my 1, 2, 3 (so two numbering systems per page) (I still don’t know how I would have kept A constant, anyway) but it doesn't want to display A1
I think I'm going to give up, it's not worth it, I will settle for A, B, C after all
Good luck and thanks again ;)
