Hello everyone,
frightening situation this morning when trying to open Mail on my MacBook Air (OS Lion 10.7.5): it prompts me to "import my existing Mail messages to the new version in order to use the new features of Mail"... However, I didn't make any particular updates last night!
Then when I click on "Continue," I get the following message:
"Import failed: an error occurred during the import. Please make sure there is enough available space in your home folder, and then try again."
So now, I'm stuck and unable to access my email (even after restarting the MacBook Air several times and "cleaning up" with OnyX).
Could you please guide me on how to resolve this situation as quickly as possible?
Thank you in advance.

After several hours of research and especially using the very handy OnyX, I was able to display the hidden files and came across the famous "Envelope Index" files in a folder located at this path:
"Users/name/Library/Mail/V2/MailData".
There were almost twenty "Envelope Index" files (!) : I moved them all to the desktop (for safety) and then opened Mail, which launched correctly by re-importing all our messages!
So, I have a few questions please:
- Can I safely delete the twenty "Envelope Index" files?
- Is the folder in the specified path above, titled "V2", "normal"? Does this imply that there was a V1 folder? Do you encounter the same thing on your Mac (OS Lion 10.7.5)?
- Why is there an "Envelope Index" file in the "MailData" folder but also at the same level as the "V2" folder? Is this normal or is it a duplicate with one of the two to delete?
- How can such a bug with Mail be explained? What could be the cause?
Thank you in advance (to help me sleep better!).
