Change your password in Mac Mail Solved/Closed

Question

Hello,

I changed the password for my Hotmail account. Immediately after, I changed my password in Mail Preferences to match. Since then, I haven't been able to connect to mail.

The error message:

The POP server "pop3.live.com" rejected the password for user "***@hotmail.com"
Please enter your password again or cancel the operation.

Can someone help me?

Hello,

I changed the password for my Hotmail email account.

Mail is probably trying to use the old password stored in your Keychain.

Go to your "Keychain Access" application (Applications / Utilities...), and there in your session, locate the line that corresponds to your access to Hotmail. If you have multiple lines regarding Mail's access to Hotmail, delete all of them. If you only have one line, ask to see the password that Keychain Access has saved. If it is incorrect, correct it or delete the line.
Back in Mail, if you have deleted everything in Keychain Access, enter the new password and request to save it again in Keychain Access.

Hello,

Check your password from your Hotmail account and be careful not to have the "Caps Lock" on.
If the password works correctly, then re-enter it in Mail; otherwise, change your password again.

Can someone please remind me of everything to check in my Mail Preferences so that it works?

Thank you very much. I tried what you advised with my keyring, but the same error message keeps coming back:

The SMTP server "smtp.live.com" refused the password for user "***@hotmail.com"

After fiddling around a lot for two days trying to solve the problem, I’m not sure what exactly to select:

Outgoing server: smtp.live.com
or
smtp.live.com:***@hotmail.com (disconnected)?

In the advanced settings, here’s what I have for now:

Port 995 (with SSL) - Authentication: password

Can you help me double-check, step by step, where my problem is coming from?

Description: = anything, for example My Hotmail Account
Email address: = your full hotmail address, for example julietteferry@hotmail.fr
Full name: = the name you want to appear to your contacts, for example: Juliette

Incoming server: = pop3.live.com
Username: = your complete email address, still following the example = julietteferry@hotmail.fr
Password: = your normal password for your hotmail account

Outgoing server: = the outgoing server of your Internet Service Provider (smtp.free.fr, smtp.orange.fr ... etc... according to your ISP)

Contrary to what is often stated, do not select the outgoing server linked to Hotmail or Live, but that of your internet service provider. See this list

In "Modify server list", (by dropping down the Outgoing server (smtp) menu, then on the "Advanced" tab
check "Use default ports"
do not check the SSL box
Authentication = None

Return to Account Information, Advanced tab:
Port: 995
SSL box checked
Authentication = Password.

Do not confuse the SSL and Authentication boxes related in the first case to the smtp server settings, and in the other case to the advanced tab of the incoming server.

Hello,

one thing I don't understand is that Hotmail IS listed in the list of ISPs you gave me.

Then, I don't know my ISP because I live abroad and both the wifi and the wired connection are provided by the building.

But I'm almost sure that the first time I set up Mail, I only entered smtp.live.com

Otherwise, I've checked all the other settings, but the password is still being rejected.

Yes, smtp.live.com can also work. But it actually depends on the ISP.
However, the ISP's smtp server always works.

Hotmail is not an ISP.
ISP = Internet Service Provider. In short, an ISP can only be the organization to which you pay your subscription, or which provides free access.

This building is necessarily connected to the net via an ISP. Therefore, you need to inquire about this.

That said, you are right, you can indeed succeed with the hotmail smtp server.
In that case, you need to use this server:
smtp.live.com
port 25

Test it, it can work very well.

So why do I discourage it?
I usually discourage it because it's often the main source of failures. For example, in my case, Free refuses to transport messages if the chosen smtp is not theirs. There’s a logic to this, as in reality my physical connection is indeed linked to Free's servers.
So, in short, the ISP's smtp server always works (when you know it), but the smtp.live server only works sometimes...;-)

I'm leaving for vacation tomorrow, so I'm going to put my computer and this puzzle (for me at least!) aside, and I'll try again when I get back, with the ultimate solution being to close my email account and reopen it.
