Hello,
I hear all sorts of information about Java. I would like to know what it is really used for and what would happen if I uninstalled it?

I have on my PC: Java (MT) 6 Update 39 (Publisher > Oracle)

Thank you in advance for your information.

Configuration: Windows Vista / Firefox 19.0

Hi there :)

In fact, Java allows you to run part of the content on the web (games, online tools...) and some software that runs on your computer (whatever it may be).

Informative note__________
The need for this program comes from the programming language (I don't know if you've heard of programming, I'm writing this just in case). The Java language is an increasingly widespread language that offers significant possibilities and is relatively easy to master (compared to binary and assembly languages of old times, which are still used, though).
And the big advantage of Java is that programs are directly compatible across all systems, Windows, Linux, and Mac, without having to recompile for each one. The secret to compatibility is that compiled Java has a specific code that can only be executed with the Java software, which reads the code differently depending on the operating systems.

-------

So, my advice is not to uninstall Java; it is a very useful program. Simply put, some software on your computer would become obsolete (not necessarily, since I don't know which software you use).
It's not for nothing that it's included by default with Windows.

Best regards,

Thank you for these explanations.
It's true that what intrigued me too is that Java is included in Windows.
But apparently there are several "types" of Java, hence my question.
In any case, I will follow your advice.

Best regards,

ahem, don't confuse Java and JavaScript.. Java is not essential... it's useful for the comfort of certain functionalities in OpenOffice... but it's nothing to do with the JavaScript that we see everywhere on the web, which is very essential. Java can risk contaminating the computer due to vulnerabilities if it is not updated regularly. I disabled it and my PC is doing just fine. I know this post is several months old, but I want to prevent some newbies from coming here with incorrect answers.

no, JavaScript is not more essential. Well, if we keep going in that direction, we can also say that computers are not essential either^^ JS can also be disabled on certain browsers. It should be noted that many people do not enable JS (mainly to avoid pop-ups or somewhat aggressive alert messages).
It's scripting languages like PHP or ASP that would be more essential, but they execute server-side, so no worries

and without Java, you cannot start OpenOffice at all unless it has been rewritten in another language since then.

otherwise, thanks for the newcomers
