Flashing and characters

Hello,

For a few days now, I've been experiencing two problems with my Thunderbird (beta 16):
upon opening, for several minutes, the lower part of the screen flickers with the indication "loading message"; previously, it was almost instantaneous.
Accentuated characters do not display in some messages, especially forwarded ones (they are replaced by signs or other characters; strangely, when I copy the same message to forward, the issue is corrected).
I believe the two phenomena are not related, but they appeared exactly at the same time...
Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you in advance for any responses.

Configuration: Windows Vista / Chrome 24.0.1312.57

It may be due to an HTML issue (message writing system).

      Thank you for your response.
It's quite possible, but it's a new phenomenon that manifests in quite a number of messages from different sources - including advertising blocks.
And if this is indeed the case, do you know how to resolve it?

You need to go to the options in Thunderbird, then in the message tab, check if it's not in HTML.

Thank you: I found a "options" section in the "tools" menu; under "general" there is a half HTML panel that gives the choice of font and size; is this what should be modified?

You note the current config and you fiddle around to see if that's where the problem comes from.
