I can read my email via Thunderbird 3.1, but I can't send it.
I receive the following message:
An error occurred while sending the message: the mail server sent an incorrect greeting message: Cannot connect to SMTP server 212.27.48.4 (212.27.48.4:25), connect error 10060.

How do I configure Thunderbird 3.1 to send mail through the smtp.free.fr server when connected to the internet via a provider other than Free (for example, while on vacation)?

Configuration: Windows 7 / Firefox 3.6.3

I'm having the same problem.
After some research, I took a look at my antivirus "AVAST" and I unchecked in:
-> resident protection
-> email agent
the box:
---> scan outgoing messages

we close Thunderbird
then we reopen it and there
"the best" everything works again....

I assume you're too hungry and you've eaten a word?

You check the list of SMTP servers... and you connect to the SMTP of the ISP you're using...
If the people you're with are with Neuf, then you'll need to set up the SMTP-AUTH protocol credentials. If they're with Numericable, no configuration needed... etc...

Yes, that's one of the issues with the SMTP protocol... since it's not secure, email servers have implemented protections that annoy users. (ISPs block port 25).

You can still send your emails via the Free web interface (https://imp.free.fr/ or https://zimbra.free.fr depending on your account settings)

For Gmail users, the SMTP server being encrypted and authenticated, and on a port different from 25, the problem does not arise.

Unfortunately, I don't have a better solution than using webmail. At worst, you should be able to use Gmail's SMTP server to send emails with your Free account (by linking the two accounts)... worth a try.

OK thanks for your response,
indeed I use Free's webmail (Zimbra) and that solves the problem
actually I had seen on Free a possibility of authenticated SMTP (beta version) but that doesn't work or I haven't configured TB properly
however since I have a Gmail account, I will try your suggestion to link my mailboxes and use Gmail

For your information: I found a solution to my outgoing message problem with Thunderbird and the SMTP protocol. I was receiving but couldn't send from all my mailboxes (Gmail, etc...). I have an Orange Livebox internet.

I went to the Livebox administrator: 192.168.1.1
There is a rule on the firewall: SMTP protocol TCP 25 accept. I deleted the rule and set SMTP protocol TCP 465 accept.

That solved my issue.

Hello everyone,
For ThunderBird with a Free email address,
I changed the:
- outgoing smtp server from 25 to 587 (same as the default one).
But it won't send emails because you need to follow the instructions by setting:
- "encrypted password" in "authentication method" in "outgoing server"
