Hello everyone
I have a problem with my Thunderbird messaging.
In some received messages, accented characters like "èéç..." are replaced by other ASCII table characters like §@...
When I asked one of the people involved, I understood that she was writing to me from the Wanadoo site's messaging, so I asked her to write to me using the mail client she had (Outlook Express) to test it, and there I got a perfect decoding of the message by Thunderbird.
So, the problem comes from the sender of the message?
I want to clarify that I have been using Thunderbird for 10 days, before that I used Outlook and had no decoding issues with messages received from the same senders.
Thank you in advance if anyone has a solution or even experience

I recommend this method which, after various other unsuccessful attempts, has proven to be the right one (the UNICODE Utf-8 option can be changed to another encoding, although it is certainly the least risky of all). Be careful, the three modifications must be made:
1 - Right-click on the incoming (and outgoing) folder of the address, properties, default encoding (uncheck "apply to all messages in the folder") > Unicode Utf-8
2 – View, Character Encoding, > Unicode Utf-8, Auto-Detection – disabled
3 - Tools - Options - View – Fonts > Unicode Utf-8 + two boxes below unchecked

I am in Quebec and I frequently receive messages in French, from Quebec and Europe, as well as in English. With Windows Vista and Windows Mail, I use the "Western Alphabet" encoding without issue and not unicode-8. When trying to use TB, I often discover this problem of accents being replaced by ? where I have to switch the encoding to Unicode-8 to retrieve all the characters.
It is surprising that this "disconcerting peculiarities" persists in late 2009 and has been around for at least 3 years (first questions about this here)
