Application error 0xc0000142 at startup Solved

Question

Hello everyone.  I have already managed to solve one or two small problems thanks to commentcamarche, which is why I am coming to you now.  My problem is quite bothersome, especially since I haven't found any topic on any forum (maybe I've searched poorly) that would have helped me. Well, I have found similar errors, but everything is always too subjective (the problems I found so far concern specific applications and not all applications without distinction).  So I'll try to explain as clearly as possible what is happening to me:  When I start my PC, Windows launches, the startup applications (Avast, Zone Alarm, MSN...) start without issue. But at that moment, when I click on any application icon (i.e., the apps and not the icons of local drives and shortcuts to directories) an error message appears:  Application error. Bla bla could not be initialized 0xc0000142...  I could provide the exact message, but I don’t have it in front of me right now; however, I will note it down at the next bug, so if necessary, I can specify it.  The message is very simple (2 lines) and it’s the same for any app. (Explorer, Fireworks, Task Manager, Windows Media Player, Winamp... all apps) Except for the title of the message, which is the name of the application file.  For example: iexplore.exe is the name of the window you can see on the taskbar, but the message is the same (application error 0xc0000142)  5'30 to 6' after startup everything returns to normal. Completely, as if nothing had happened. So I go about my business, and long after (like between 6 and 12 hours of using the PC) it starts again.  * same error message for any app * windows freeze * running apps freeze * impossible to close running apps (sometimes yes, but very difficult and with a lot of patience) * impossible to shut down the PC normally.  It's been about a week (sniff...) that this thing is wasting my time and energy, it's been a week since I properly restarted my PC, and I'm considering the idea of reinstalling Windows because I'm not used to being overwhelmed by issues, but reinstalling means more wasted energy and time; just imagining it makes me already fed up! But just thinking of my PC at zero leaves me daydreaming (especially since I had no problems before! Everything was running perfectly)...  So... Here I am. Has anyone ever had this problem?  Does anyone know how to fix this? Am I going to have to reinstall Windows, all the drivers, and all the applications one by one?   If anyone can hear me... I found the solution in my case:

Start in Safe Mode
Go to the Command Prompt
Right-click and "Run as administrator"
Type "sfc /scannow"
Restart the PC

Here is the true error message.  For Firefox:  Firefox.exe Application Error The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142). Click OK to terminate the application. I have this problem too. Specifically, at startup, it prevents certain .exe files from launching (including rundll32.exe), and it doesn't seem like this issue goes away after a few minutes.

I went to Microsoft's website to read their page, and I must admit it's gibberish to me.

To resolve this issue, proceed as follows:
1. Verify that the folder Program Files\Microsoft ISA Server\Clients exists. ISA Server services require this folder to be running.
2. Verify that security groups have been granted Full Control permissions for the folder Program Files\Microsoft ISA Server\Clients:
Administrators
SYSTEM
3. Verify that the file Msplat.txt exists in the Clients folder. If this file is missing, copy it from another ISA Server computer.

1. I don't know what an ISA SERVER is. My PC runs locally; it’s not a server... Furthermore, this issue is preventing me from launching Explorer, so it's not convenient for checking the directory structure.

2. I don't know what Full Control permission means.

3. I don't know where the Clients folder is nor, if applicable, how to find another ISA SERVER computer to copy and paste the Msplat.txt file.

I really don't understand anything, and it talks so much about servers that I wonder if the solution would be appropriate for my PC... Moreover, even if I had mistakenly managed to copy this Msplat.txt file, their note, "Note: after copying this file from another ISA Server computer, display the local address table to verify that it contains the correct IP address range," is Chinese to me.

Does anyone know more?

Hi everyone, I just encountered those famous errors; upon startup, no program could launch with an application error message.

I managed to fix it by uninstalling the daemon tools toolbar (a little oversight on my part).
So to sum up, make sure you don't have any spyware, and when in doubt, remove all toolbars (BHO).

A good clean-up of temporary files, the registry, and keep the minimum number of programs on startup—almost nothing for testing—and then reintroduce them one by one.

There you go, hoping to help a few more (considering the date of the last post) :-).

Good evening everyone, I too had the error message issue today: opening a schtasks.exe window when shutting down Windows: "the process did not initialize correctly error code 0xc0000142"

To begin with, I looked on the Microsoft support site but I couldn't find my exact error message. After several uninstallations of programs I had recently installed (Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64 emulators), (Shockwave Flash Player 11, Java RE 6 Update 11, to resolve vulnerabilities found by K.I.S 2009), nothing worked, the message kept appearing.

I still solved the problem by doing a system restore which was painful (after 5 failed restoration attempts due to a poor choice of restore point).
According to my understanding, this error in the task manager initialization process occurred because of a badly installed ActiveX.

Indeed, I recently uninstalled Adobe Flash Player ActiveX from Internet Explorer (following malfunctions on the M6 Replay site, thinking that reinstalling the ActiveX would solve the problem).
When I tried to reinstall the ActiveX: my PC crashed and froze, even though it was from the M6 Replay site and signed by Adobe, Kaspersky classified it as "doubtful restrictions"; hence my feeling of an error at the time of installation.

In any case, my PC is working perfectly now, if this can help someone, see you later ; )

Avast antivirus found 2 Adwares in my Windows\system32. After quarantining them, "everything returned to normal." No error messages anymore!

Hello. I also had this problem (0xc0000142).
I managed to solve it quite difficultly after trying everything. But I found something that will help you if the problem persists. I myself managed thanks to this:

-Start Windows normally (not in safe mode)
-If Mozilla doesn't work, use Internet Explorer
-Download RegClean Pro for Windows (free version)
-Do everything they ask but no need to buy
-Restart the PC
-Everything should normally be back to normal after RegClean Pro has scanned the computer.

after searching a lot I found a solution on microsotf.com in English and it worked well...

Method 1:
You may try to install the game in compatibility mode and then test the issue:
a. Right-click on the setup file.
b. Click on Properties.
c. Click on the Compatibility tab.
d. Put a check mark on Run this program in compatibility mode for.
e. Select the operating system for which the driver is available.
f. Put a check mark on Run this program as an administrator under Privilege Level.

Translation
a. Right-click on the configuration file.
b. Click on Properties.
c. Click on the Compatibility tab.
d. Check (Run this program in compatibility mode for).
e. Select the operating system for which the driver is available (I tried Vista).
f. Check (Run this program as an administrator under Privilege Level)

Thank you El_T49, it worked for me.

- The problem: PowerPoint wouldn’t start and generated error 0x00000142
- The environment: Windows 8.1 + Office 365 (fresh installation after having reinstalled Office 2 or 3 times on the advice of the Microsoft forum)
- The solution: I applied your advice and PowerPoint is now running perfectly in Windows 8 compatibility mode.

Really thank you, I had tried almost all the other solutions for 15 days!
