Good evening,
and best wishes to everyone
As for my PC, it is starting the year off very poorly; in fact, when I turn it on, the fan starts, but not the hard drive, the fan stops immediately, then I get the following messages:
Check cable connection ...!
PXE-E63 Error while initializing the NIC
PXE-M0F Exiting Intel PXE ROM
No bootable device - insert boot disk and press any key
I have an Emachines e525 with Vista. The PC is 2 years old and I would like to recover my data.
I had made recovery CDs when I bought my PC, but I have moved twice since then,
and I can't find those CDs.
Can I download recovery CDs for free and in French (I know I am a bit demanding ...!)
With a recovery CD, could I recover my data?
Thank you in advance for your valuable help.

There are several possibilities:
- the disk is dead
- the power cable for the disk is disconnected
- the data cable for the disk is disconnected
- the hard drive has been wiped
- the BIOS has been modified not to boot from the disk
If this happened suddenly, we can rule out the last two possibilities.
Therefore, we need to open the computer and check the connections.
Before opening it, we can go into the BIOS to see if the hard drive is detected. If it is detected but does not boot, then it is probably dead.
If it is not detected, it is probably just disconnected, and we need to open it.

This message (PXE) indicates that during the boot procedure it could not find a hard drive. It is therefore either dead, disconnected, or erased!
Thank you for your explanations,
I will turn on my PC because the hard drive is not detected in the BIOS.
I will keep you updated. Thank you.

Here, I tried to open my laptop. I was able to access the hard drive but it is well connected, secured with 2 screws. However, I can't fully open my laptop, so I can't check if something else is disconnected.
It should not be fully opened.
In principle, the two screws holding the disk should be removed, the disk should be completely taken out, and then reconnected.
If the problem persists, you should either:
- test another disk on the computer (to check that the motherboard is OK)
- test the hard drive on another computer (to check that the disk is OK)

I was able to recover the data from the hard drive by inserting an Ubuntu CD.
Now I would like to know if I can reinstall this laptop.

If you were able to recover the data from a CD, it means your disk was indeed detected contrary to what you previously announced.
To reinstall Windows, simply insert the original CD or the restoration CDs, or sometimes the PC is equipped with a recovery partition.

But I think my PC doesn't want to hear anything anymore,
it doesn't even restart from the Ubuntu CD.
I will try my luck again tomorrow morning, but not with great hope.
The main thing is that I was able to recover my data.
Thanks again very much.
Have a good evening.

Hello,
here are the latest news from my laptop.
I recovered my data from my hard drive with an Ubuntu CD.
With a Hiren's Boot CD, I can see my drives,
but none are named c: , I have b: and x: instead.
I found my reinstallation CDs,
when I boot from them, Windows starts and then
the restoration. It detects my hard drive well, but not
its letter: it displays the brand of the HDD but not the letter.
Then it crashes.
I don't think I'm far from restarting this laptop,
but I don't know what to do now.
I just want to reformat this hard drive to properly reinstall
the original CDs.
Thank you in advance for your help.

When you start with your Windows Vista CD, do not choose restore/repair but new installation!
If you want, you can delete the partitions beforehand using a liveCD, that way you can be sure it won't try to repair it^^

Hello,
I am not quick to give news, but I don't have much time right now to devote to my phone.
However, as you told me, I have erased all the partitions from a live CD.
When I boot from the live CD, it recognizes my hard drive and it is empty.
But as soon as I want to restart my laptop from the hard drive, it tells me that I need to insert a boot disk.
And now I don't know what to do...
