I'm trying to customize my toolbar in Word, and my computer doesn't seem to update the Normal.dot file (it's dated from November) even though I ensure it saves by selecting the format/font and asking it to set a new default font after customizing my toolbar. What can I do since I have to customize the existing toolbars again or recreate my custom toolbar from scratch every time I restart my computer?

You need to go to Tools => Options => Default Folders
Check what is displayed next to 'User Templates': it’s the address where your templates are stored (all your templates from the Office suite (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel)). (You can change this address, but you will need to place all your templates there).
Your 'normal.dot' and the other templates you created should be located there if you want to see them when you go to File => New => 'on my computer' or 'Create from template (General templates)', depending on the version of Word.
Open normal.dot (make sure it’s the .dot).
To do this, go through File => Open
you will make the changes you want there: it’s the templates (.dot) that store your environment (toolbars, styles, formats, etc.).
When it is as you want, save it to the address indicated in 'default folders'.
This is the one that Word will open by default.
To verify that it is indeed the one, you can, for example, paste a big red square or write something in it before saving your normal.dot.
This way, you will be able to see that it is indeed the one you just saved when you launch Word.
I hope this helps you solve your problem.
