Hello,
I have a 1.5 TB Western Digital external hard drive with 356 GB used for storing personal photos and videos, purchased two years ago.
For the past few weeks, the time to open directories or load photos has become very, very long (on the order of several seconds or more).
It has become impossible to play a video directly from this drive, as it constantly interrupts for long durations.
When I try to copy files from this drive to my internal disk, it also takes an incredibly long time.
Since the computer had also become very slow, I installed Malwarebytes and removed about ten malware, and I did a virus scan with Eset online. Then I did a disk cleanup with CCleaner and cleaned the registry with Regcleaner.
Finally, I defragmented my hard drives with Auslogics Defrag (it took me two weeks for the 1.5 TB drive).
After all that, the computer works much better.
However, the access times for the external drive are still very long.
I am now at the point of considering purchasing a new hard drive to transfer all my photos and videos because I fear this one is failing.
Is there anything else to try before going down that path?
Thank you in advance to those who will take the time to consider my problem.
Best regards,
Eric

Good evening,
It is important to specify the configuration of your PC for such a question (processor, RAM, etc.) because the components greatly affect the execution speed...
However, it is very strange that it takes you a week and a half to defragment your 1.5 TB hard drive. Or else your PC is from 1991! lol
In my opinion, your problem comes from the USB port you are using rather than the hard drive!
1) Change the cable.
2) If it still lags, try plugging your hard drive into another USB port on the PC.
3) Also check in the Control Panel/device manager that your USB and hard drive drivers are properly installed, up to date, and not conflicting with other components.
4) Test your hard drive by connecting it to another PC (friend, family, etc.)
Best regards,
