remote access to a Livebox

Question

Hello,

first of all, I would like to know if it is possible: to access my livebox from the internet from anywhere... and thus also access my hard drive connected to it ;)

I believe that if this is possible, you need a fixed IP address for my livebox first, otherwise it's impossible to reach it or with really a lot of luck!!

So let's assume I have requested a fixed IP address for my livebox from my ISP (Orange, to not name it, anyway: livebox = Orange :p) and that they assigned it to me

how do I access my livebox via the internet?

The latest Livebox is compatible with DynDNS; you need to start by creating a free account and then create a hostname. Once that's done, go to the Livebox interface in the DynDNS section and enter your DynDNS account username and password along with the hostname to be updated.

Get information from the no-ip.com services
It's a program that allows you to have a domain name for free that points to your IP address.
Then you set up a port forwarding to your livebox address.

It's a theory... I don't know if it will work.

I looked a bit at no-ip, but this site allows you to always have a fixed IP on a PC, but on the router side, you have to ask the ISP...

Let me explain again (I hope better!)

I have a hard drive plugged into my Livebox and I access it via the Wi-Fi from anywhere within range of my router.

Now, I would like to do two things:
create a shortcut on my desktop through which I can directly access my external hard drive (just like network drives in companies, in fact).

Then, be able to access this same hard drive from the internet... so from "anywhere" (at friends' houses, from a hotspot,...)

No, no-ip allows you to have a fixed URL for a dynamic IP at the router level, meaning your public IP.

To create the icon on the desktop, you just need to go to: tools -> Map network drive and enter your IP or its path (I don't know how it works for drives connected to routers)

And via the internet, it's the same principle except that one of the computers will need to stay on to run no-ip.

Or you could look into VPNs.

Indeed, the VPN network is a solution, but this solution also requires keeping a PC on for the outgoing server...

But I was wondering: since my Livebox has an IP address (which is not fixed, of course), would it be possible to access my Livebox through this IP address (assuming I could manage to assign it a static IP...)

I haven't tested it, but I don't think so... otherwise it would be easy to mess around in other people's boxes just by knowing the IP address.
Access to the web interface page can only be done via the private address of the box, that is to say within the LAN.

I did some more research...
remote administration is possible (accessing the settings of your box from the internet) by using DynDNS, which allows you to link a URL to a dynamic IP address, like those of many boxes...

so I thought it should be possible to access the data present on the box's network without it being much more complicated, but I haven't found much...

does anyone know if the latest Livebox offers such a service, similar to DynDNS... ??

If you don't want to deal with a VNC server that requires your computer to be on in order to connect to it, you can buy a NAS (Network Attached Storage) box along with the necessary hard drives.
You just need to plug the NAS into the livebox and configure the NAS as an FTP server to access your files remotely.
The downside is the price; a NAS is not affordable for everyone, especially considering you need to add the cost of the hard drives.

because solution number 1 involves leaving the PC on, and number 2 involves quite a few expenses...

(However, on a LAN network, I know it's possible to remotely turn a PC on and off; you just need to change a setting in the BIOS, but does it also work over the internet (I'm thinking of Italc, which is super handy but mainly useful for teachers during classes on PC..., this software enables this function)?)

Here is what I propose because it's the solution I use. You buy the Pogoplug (around €80). You connect it to your box (I also have the Livebox) and you plug your hard drives (up to 3) into it via USB. That's all, don't worry about IP addresses, etc. Now, if the hard drive you're interested in is the one from your PC, of course, the latter will need to be on. What I do, since my PC is a laptop and I don't want to leave it on all the time, is that I have an external hard drive on which my data is continuously backed up. When I leave my home, I disconnect this hard drive from my PC and connect it to the Pogoplug. Then, from any PC (in an internet café, for example), I go on the web, type "my pogoplug," then my login credentials (which I was asked for when I connected the Pogoplug for the first time) and that's it: I have access to the data on my hard drive that is at home. Of course, it costs a small amount.

But I have neither W7 nor Freebox; I'm using XP and Livebox. To solve my problem, I'll stick with the Pogoplug solution. By the way, with this device, you now get 5 GB for free in Pogocloud. Not bad!

If you have a Livebox 2, you can enable remote administration. Log in as admin and then click on the Remote Administration tab. You will need a domain name to be able to access your Livebox from the Internet.

I don't understand how you can want to access a network resource if the PC it's hosted on isn't turned on; it's not possible.  Either it's connected directly to the router (external hard drive, etc.), or you need to leave a PC/server on all the time.  Or you buy a NAS, and you can access it remotely, but again, it will need to stay on.

To access a powered-on box, theoretically, you need to have the public IP, the local IP if there are multiple PCs on the local network, perform an "exploit," and most of the time, there’s no need for a brute force attack, just type "admin."

Hello   you need to ask Orange to assign you a fixed IP address and it comes at a cost.   otherwise, you can find the public IP address in the box's interface.
