Formatting impossible... External hard drive faulty?

Good evening everyone!
My problem is not isolated given the numerous posts dedicated to it, but I still haven't found the answer.
I have a 500GB Verbatim "stor'n'go" external hard drive. I bought it two years ago. It was working fine until today. Now, when I connect it to my computer, it cannot be read and a message states: "You need to format the disk in drive G"
I tried connecting my external hard drive to another desktop computer and a Mac as well to read and recover my data, but the same message appears. In the evening my hard drive was working fine, and then the next day, I tried to plug it into a university computer and that was when it stopped working altogether. It might also be important to mention that for the past few weeks I was able to read my hard drive one time out of two and sometimes this formatting message appeared, but ultimately the computer managed to read it.
I had come to terms with losing my data that was on my disk (Oh! miracle, my photos of a lifetime are also stored on my computer ^^), because I tried to recover this data using dedicated software but I didn't quite understand how it worked... so never mind.
The main question of this post is: But how do you format an external hard drive?
When the window opens with the message "You need to format the disk in drive G," I click on "Format Disk." Immediately there are several things that are foreign to me. "File System" = I left it as NTFS
Allocation unit size = default. Then, do I need to put a volume label? I clicked "Start" but it didn't work. I unchecked the "Quick Format" box and it worked, but at 99%, when I thought yay, a window opened with an error message, I can't remember which. All this to say that I still can't read it.
I took another route; Control Panel --> Administrative Tools --> Computer Management --> Storage --> Disk Management, etc... but again formatting doesn't work.... However, it states: file system: RAW for my external hard drive.
I apologize for this lengthy message, but if there's one essential thing to know, it's that computing is an alien world for me! So if you could use simplified language that would be great!
I'm eagerly awaiting your solutions!!

It works!!
I did "delete the volume" and then in disk management on my external HDD, I clicked something like "create a new volume" and I changed the drive letter and path and it seems to be working. However, now the file system is NTFS and no longer RAW? What does that change?
I'm going to try to load files onto the HDD to confirm that everything works......
In any case, thanks Poupougne13 for your help!! :)

Thank you, I had the same problem and was a bit afraid to delete the volume! But it's THE solution, DDE is usable again.
