My external hard drive won't format.

Does it make strange noises? (read means it reads data, write means adding, modifying or deleting data)

Try with Gparted and recreate the partition table

Use Lili USB Creator to boot with the USB key

The folder I named "Film" is on the external hard drive but it’s empty because it was cut during the transfer. And because of the folder that remains I can’t format. I did try a software to completely erase the external drive in the hope that it would remove the folder that makes it crash. But that also failed.

Have you tried the "beast" right-click -> format? Sometimes software is picky.

If it still doesn’t work, you can always try deleting all the data manually and then try formatting again.
